A memo from Mother Earth...

There’s little that Gaia doesn’t offer location scouts... Layered with character, this light-infused urban sanctuary – with raw brick, hand-hewn stone, blue gum beams and rustic yellowwood – is set under a sheath of steel and glass.

Choose between graffiti walls, art installations, a generous farmhouse kitchen with a pizza oven, or the library with its billiard table. Outside, dogs, chickens and five elegant horses complete the scene. Mother Earth in every detail.

There’s always luxury in a decorating style that rates over-scaled dimensions as one of its key elements. Palm House, an Englishman-in-Africa-style country house in Constantia, has it in bucket loads. Perhaps it’s the planters housing the banana trees – not just any banana trees, but enormous ones whose branches soar up to ceilings held aloft by gnarled, white-painted beams. They’re unexpected, as are the overly deep sofas and the sense of theatre that pervades the entire interior.

At Bobbejaanskloof everywhere you look, both in and out, there’s an elemental style to the materials chosen, from the rough roof beams to the latte ceilings, the polished elephant-grey cement floors to the Nguni hides dotted about on them. Baskets, wicker and riempie define the look of Bobbejaanskloof, as does the muted colour scheme. Everywhere there’s an obsession with nature, its textures and patterns. And there are scrubbed wooden bowls, brass lamps, raffia shades, heavy, handmade glass, armchairs dressed in rough linen slip covers – it’s that ‘I had a farm in Africa’ look, only this time it’s South Africa in the spotlight.

Cowrie Cottage is an unlikely home on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast. It’s intimate and under thatch, and fits effortlessly into the surrounding coastal forest without disturbing the environment. An authentic African beach house it is, with décor reflecting a touch of White Mischief and a whole lot of Hemingway. This implies a thoroughly African cottage but with no rough edges. There are checkerboard bathroom floors and antique fittings, draped mosquito nets over beds and light shades reminiscent of fish traps, a few accents of kuba cloth and zebra hide are seen in ottomans and there’s plenty of crisp white linen swathing the queen beds.

This gorgeous cottage was love at first sight for us with its beautiful, luxurious décor. Once again Salome Gunter works her magic and turned an average summer cottage into a perfect hideaway. The previous owner was an artist, and many of his pieces grace the walls. Boulders Cottage has sea views all the way across False bay to Hangklip. Only the locals and the penguins know of this idyllic beach that is only 100m down the path. The colourful indigenous garden, courtyard and deck ensures privacy. Only half an hour from the centre of Cape Town for all your restaurants, harbour and wine estates. Fifteen minutes from the famous Cape Point reserve for wonderful hikes, bicycling, surfing and views. You can also walk to the vibrant naval town of Simonstown with its quaint restaurants and shops. A stellar shoot location in our eyes!
