🌿 Malaria in South Africa: What Travellers Should Really Know (🇮🇹👇🏻pinned comment)
Many travellers get scared by the idea of malaria in South Africa — but the reality is that most of the country is completely malaria-free.
Malaria is found only in some areas around the far north-east, such as parts of the Kruger region and the Limpopo border.
Everywhere else — including Cape Town, the Western Cape, Eastern Cape reserves, Garden Route, Drakensberg, Wild Coast, Karoo, KZN South Coast — is malaria-free all year round.
If you’re planning to visit an area where malaria can occur, there are two smart options:
1️⃣ Travel in the dry winter months (May–October)
Mosquitoes are almost absent in winter, which greatly reduces risk.
2️⃣ Choose malaria-free destinations for total peace of mind
Especially recommended for families, first-timers, pregnancy, or anyone who simply prefers stress-free safari.
The Eastern Cape reserves are some of the most popular malaria-free safari destinations in South Africa.
What about medication?
Malaria prophylaxis is an option to discuss with a doctor, but it’s important to know that:
– it doesn’t guarantee 100% protection
– seasonality matters (winter months have extremely low mosquito activity)
– South Africa has excellent healthcare infrastructure and malaria is very well managed in the rare cases it occurs
Basic prevention is always useful and very simple:
• use repellent
• wear long sleeves at sunrise/sunset
• sleep under a mosquito net when available
• keep windows closed and fans on at night
• mosquitoes are not active during the day
