Airfares surge on Europe, US routes
Yesterday - By Tylin Moodley

Airfares are climbing sharply as the Middle East conflict pushes up jet fuel prices and restricts flight capacity, with agents reporting the biggest increases on routes to Europe, the UK and US.

A Travel News poll found that 45% of respondents reported the sharpest airfare increases on European routes, followed by 14% for the UK and 10% for the US. Meanwhile, a poll on the OpenJaw Facebook group showed Europe and the US experiencing the biggest spikes, with each region receiving 44% of the votes.

WTTC slams UK’s ETA as tourism barrier
Yesterday

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has strongly criticised the UK’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system, which came into effect for European visa-exempt travellers on April 2.

WTTC President and CEO, Julia Simpson, has called it an unnecessary financial burden on international travellers and a potential threat to the country’s tourism industry.

She condemned the policy, arguing that it contradicted the UK government’s supposed commitment to economic growth.

“This completely undermines the UK’s growth policy. Instead of making the UK an attractive place to visit, this is another barrier to tourists,” said Simpson.

The ETA, which requires visitors from visa-exempt countries to obtain pre-travel authorisation, adds yet another cost to travel in a country that is already among the most expensive to visit, according to Simpson.

She highlighted several factors that made the UK a costly destination, including high VAT, Air Passenger Duty, and the absence of tax-free shopping for international visitors.

“Travel and tourism contribute more than £280bn (R6,9trn) to the UK economy and supports over four million jobs across the country, and our businesses pay £100bn (R2,4trn) annually to the Treasury in tax revenues. Prime Minister Keir Starmer needs to focus on growing the economy, and protecting jobs, not introducing policies that jeopardise them.”

Canada visas – record rejections affect South Africans
Yesterday - by Tylin Moodley

In 2024, Canada rejected a record number temporary resident visas, including those for tourists, foreign workers and students, resulting in its highest-ever rejection rate.

Data obtained by the Toronto Star, showed that more than 2,3 million (50%) visas were rejected in 2024 compared with 1,8 million (35%) in 2023. Around 1,95 million (54%) visitor visas were rejected, up from 40% in 2023.

In September 2024, Travel News reported that Canada was approving fewer tourist visas following government measures to reduce temporary residents who were blamed for housing shortages and high property prices.

After the earthquake: Business as usual in Bangkok
Yesterday

Thailand’s authorities have moved to assure tourists that the country is operating as normal after a massive 7,7-magnitude earthquake struck neighbouring Myanmar on Friday, March 28, and was felt as far away as Bangkok.

Officials say the quake, which had its epicentre in northwest Myanmar, was the largest to hit the nation in more than a century. Along with Thailand, tremors were felt in parts of Bangladesh, Vietnam and China, Karryon reports.

Second CPT runway – a decade in the making
Yesterday - by Kiran Molloy

As part of its Airport Masterplan, Acsa is planning a second parallel runway at Cape Town International Airport (CPT) alongside the current runway realignment project. However, due to complexities around land use and community impact, the project is unlikely to begin within the next 10 years.

“The second runway at CPT is a strategic initiative as per the Airport Masterplan to achieve an ultimate capacity of 40-45 million passengers annually,” explained an Acsa spokesperson.
