Augrabies Falls National Park, always a spectacular visit. A quick one on this occasion, overnight en-route to the Kgalagadi Gemsbok National Park. Famous for the Klipspringer 4 day hiking trail with 2 days along the rim of the canyon. This time got to drive to some of view points.

As we head towards autumn, the second of our bi-weekly Vergelegen Day Hikes, including wine tasting and picnic lunch. Always a special experience to drive through the Nature Reserve, with the quagga project, eland, black wildebeest and recently introduced ostrich. Perfect weather on the day

Cedarpeak Wilderness Explorer:
Fully-catered, 4-day, 3-night, guided slackpacking trail.

In the foothills of the Groot Winterhoek mountains, just south of the Cederberg Wilderness Area, Cedarpeak private nature reserve is a pristine wilderness escape for connoisseurs. The heart of the Cape
Floral Kingdom, it is known for its extraordinary diversity. This is big sky country, a diverse landscape of water features, bizarrely weathered rock formations and rock paintings. Let your imagination roam free in the natural sculpture garden and you’ll be among camels and elephants, dragons and prehistoric creatures.
Numerous streams and rivers run through the property, so it’s surprisingly lush, with waterfalls, rock pools, wetlands and a big dam alive with water birds. Sugarbirds and sunbirds flit around in the fynbos, Verreaux’s and fish eagles soar overhead and flocks of seasonal swallows are a treat while the absence of light
pollution ensures star-studded skies.

DATES: 30 April to 3 May 2026
LOGISTICS: Cedarpeak is a two and a half hour drive from Cape Town.
ACCOMMODATION As is appropriate for a place where you’ll be marvelling at the grandeur of nature, the five, secluded cottages are simple, yet comfortable with chic décor, free standing baths and beautiful views.
DIFFICULTY Some 50 kilometres of marked paths - for the exclusive use of Cedarpeak guests - offer a variety of different walks from gentle strolls to more challenging hikes. Routes can be geared to hikers’ fitness and interests but there are three main circuits (between 6.5km and 12km) each of which will take 4-6 hours. The abundance of water means that this is a great year-round destination. On hot days we prefer to offer two shorter hikes (2-3 hours), one in the early morning, the other in the late afternoon. And if you prefer to take time off from hiking you can just sit out enjoying this tranquil wilderness.
PRICE: R8,900pp sharing for 4 days, 3 nights. Based on group of 6 hikers. This is an exclusive, guided trail that accommodates a maximum of 12 hikers. All meals and soft drinks as well as an on-site wine tasting and a botanical ‘gelli printing’ course are included.

Although the annual red disa (Disa uniflora) is largely behind us, there is always plenty of other special fynbos species making their appearance. Not to mention the views from Table Mountain and the delight in being out there.

So much to explore on the Vergelegen Hiking Trail. Having hiked through the fynbos to finish with the superb wine tasting and drive through the enclosed section of the Nature Reserve, with the fascinating Quagga project collaboration, the expanding herd of eland and wildebeest and finally an amazing picnic lunch. You can't leave without passing the 300 year old camphor trees but you will need to return to enjoy garden and shorter paths through the yellowwoods and camellia so

The Cave loop at Cedarpeak, ideal for a short warm up hike, or a wind down before you leave. 6km and reasonably easy underfoot. One of the many trail options starting from the camp. No need to carry more than a day pack on any of the loops.

Always special to explore and discover new properties and places where the setting is unbelievably beautiful and the facilities comfortable and well appointed. Cedarpeak was one of those places for me with a big variety of hiking options and comfortable accommodation. Hike and explore is our motto, so we love new options, but knowing that there is more to find when we get to know it better.
