Could you already be British, even if you have never held a British passport?

For some South Africans with a British parent, the answer may be yes. It depends on birth dates, family circumstances and whether the parent could pass citizenship on.

There is a practical reason to check. The UK began enforcing digital permission-to-travel checks on 25 February 2026, and British dual citizens cannot obtain an ETA.

GOV.UK also says the Home Office does not hold records of everyone who acquired British citizenship automatically. A missing passport history does not settle the question.

Today, our Gauteng office at Move UP is wearing black.

Not because it is a theme. Not because it makes for a photograph. We are wearing black because women are being killed, and what is happening in Kempton Park has left us angry, heartbroken and deeply disturbed.

Behind every report of a woman being found dead is a person who had a name, a family, plans, people who loved her and a life that should never have been taken from her.

We cannot allow the murder of women to become another headline that we read, shake our heads at, and then forget about a few days later. We cannot become so accustomed to violence against women that another body becomes another statistic.

Today, we stand with the women of Kempton Park. We stand with the families waiting for answers. We stand with every mother who worries when her daughter does not answer her phone. We stand with every woman who has ever looked over her shoulder while walking to her car, shared her live location because she was afraid, or changed her route home because something did not feel right.

And we stand against the culture that continues to make women responsible for protecting themselves from violence that should never be inflicted on them in the first place.

Our black clothing today represents mourning, but it also represents solidarity.

We want justice. We want answers. We want these cases investigated properly and urgently. Most importantly, we want to live in a South Africa where women do not have to calculate the risk involved in simply existing.

To the families who have lost daughters, sisters, mothers, friends and loved ones: your grief matters. Their lives mattered. They must never be reduced to numbers in a news report.

That is a big number but the real insight is this:

Citizenship is often the final expensive step in an already costly immigration journey.

By that stage, many applicants may already have paid for visas, the immigration health surcharge, extensions and settlement.

Sometimes adults become so focused on proving a child’s circumstances that they forget to let the child explain those circumstances.

Our team recently assisted with an unusual application for a minor child seeking to join their family in the UK as the dependant of a Skilled Worker.

The original application included extensive evidence addressing the family circumstances and sole responsibility but it was unexpectedly refused.

When the family reapplied, much of the underlying evidence remained the same. What changed was how the story was presented.

The new application included detailed representations addressing the refusal, together with a statement presenting the child’s own perspective:

- Who had fulfilled the parental role in the child’s daily life?
- How did the child understand the family relationships?
- How did the child feel about moving to the United Kingdom?

The new application was successful.

One case does not create a universal formula, and every application must be assessed on its own facts. But it reinforced something important for our team:
