From the bush to the beach, Lindsay & Natasha’s recent KwaZulu-Natal road trip showcased some of the province’s most incredible stays and safari experiences.
‘Our journey began at Rhino Sands Safari Camp in Manyoni Private Game Reserve, an approximately a three-hour drive from Durban’s King Shaka International Airport. This intimate luxury tented camp is tucked beneath towering trees near with only five beautifully designed tents overlooking the riverbed. We had exceptional hospitality from hosts Jono & Andy, and unforgettable game drives with guide Bryan. It was the perfect introduction to the KwaZulu-Natal bush. Chris, our personal butler during the stay, ensured every detail was thoughtfully taken care of. Rhino Sands perfectly balances understated luxury with authentic safari intimacy. Highlights included witnessing a rare cheetah kill sighting and seeing a newborn giraffe only hours old.
Next stop was Makakatana Bay Lodge in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park region, where forested surroundings open dramatically onto breathtaking lagoon views. This owner-managed charming lodge offered warm hospitality, eco-boat cruises, nature drives, outdoor showers, birding and a relaxed atmosphere that perfectly complemented the safari portion of the trip. Our sunset eco-boat cruise on the estuary with guide Mac showcased the beauty of the wetlands, followed by a gentle morning nature drive with Juandre. The lodge offers an excellent variety of activities for longer stays and would pair beautifully with Rhino Sands for clients wanting to experience both bush and wetlands.
The adventure continued to Biyela Lodge at mFulaWozi Wilderness Reserve, perched high above the White iMfolozi River. We were immediately impressed with its contemporary design, dramatic views, and warm welcome from Spha and Nonto. We loved the contemporary suites with private plunge pools, dramatic river views, and incredible meals around the firepit. The game drives showcased the incredible diversity of the reserve’s terrain — from mountains and valleys to river systems and open plains. Guide Adriaan’s passion for conservation and deep knowledge of the area brought every drive to life. Lion sightings, rhinos, buffalo, and spectacular scenery created unforgettable memories. A visit to nearby Mthembu Lodge offered insight into the reserve’s more family-friendly option, with its relaxed atmosphere and welcoming spaces suited to multigenerational travel.
At Babanango Game Reserve, the landscapes became even more dramatic, with rolling hills, valleys, cliffs, and river systems providing the backdrop. Madwaleni delivered a luxurious tented experience overlooking the river with spacious suites that left guests wanting for nothing. Wildlife sightings of plains game were plentiful, particularly rhino. Zulu Rock Lodge was dramatically positioned atop a rocky outcrop with breathtaking panoramic views across the reserve. Gugu, Mandisa, and their team offered heartfelt hospitality throughout our stay. Guide Sabelo added incredible depth to the experience, not only through his wildlife knowledge but also by sharing the history and cultural heritage of the surrounding area. We had a touching Mother’s Day sighting of a mother rhino and her calf which was wonderful. From luxury tented suites and meaningful rhino sightings to panoramic mountain views and rich Zulu cultural storytelling, the reserve delivered a truly amazing safari experience.
After days spent immersed in the bush, we ended with a seaside escape at Sala Beach House on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast. This hidden gem, an elegant, beautifully curated boutique property with spacious ocean-facing suites, had exceptional décor and luxurious amenities, and the soothing sound of waves created the perfect environment to unwind. The warm hospitality from Craig (the owner), Henk (front of house manager), and the entire team immediately made guests feel at home. The cocktail evening hosted alongside fellow travel industry partners created a relaxed and memorable networking opportunity. With its ocean-facing suites, beach and tidal pool access, exceptional hospitality, and sunrise beach walks, it is the perfect place to reflect and relax.
The final two days were spent attending Travel Indaba at the Durban International Convention Centre, reconnecting with long-standing industry friends, building new relationships, and seeing firsthand how the show has evolved over the years. The integration of AI technology and the smooth organisation of the event stood out, making for an efficient and engaging experience.
The trip served as a powerful reminder of just how spectacular South Africa’s most underrated safari destination KwaZulu-Natal truly is, from its dramatic reserves and rich wildlife experiences to its warm hospitality, tropical climate, and incredible diversity of product offerings. Thank you to all our hosts - we absolutely loved every minute of it!’
