After years of guiding visitors around Cape Town, I’ve noticed the same mistakes come up again and again.
If you’re planning a trip, here’s the advice I wish everyone heard before arriving:
1. Don’t save Table Mountain for your last day.
Cape Town’s weather can change quickly. If conditions are good, go. The cableway may stop operating if winds pick up, and you’ll always want to allow enough time to descend safely before closing.
2. The Cape Peninsula deserves more time than you think.
Many visitors rush through it in a few hours. In reality, it’s one of the most diverse and rewarding days you can spend in South Africa.
3. Boulders Beach isn’t your only penguin option.
It’s famous for a reason, but there are alternative viewing spots nearby that are often quieter, less crowded, and don’t require the same entrance fees.
4. Leave room for spontaneity.
The best moments are often the ones that never made it onto the itinerary.
5. Winter is one of Cape Town’s best-kept secrets.
Fewer crowds, dramatic scenery, whale sightings, and some of the clearest days of the year.
6. Some of Cape Town’s best highlights aren’t in the guidebooks.
A surprising number of incredible viewpoints, local stories, hidden beaches, and lesser-known stops are places most visitors would never discover on their own.
7. You don’t need to do everything.
A relaxed trip with a few meaningful experiences is usually far more memorable than racing between attractions.
8. One visit is rarely enough.
Cape Town has a habit of leaving people planning their return before they’ve even boarded the flight home.
Have you been to Cape Town before? What’s one piece of advice you’d add to this list? 👇
