On my day off, one of my absolute favourite things to do is keep learning. ❤️
I’m constantly digging deeper into the stories of our history, trying to understand more — a work in progress that I know will continue forever.
Today, I chose the Bo-Kaap.
But this time, I wanted to go beyond simply walking through the colourful streets. I wanted to slow down, spend time in the area, meet people who actually live there, and have real conversations with locals.
I was incredibly moved and grateful for their openness, honesty and willingness to share their stories and perspectives with me.
And that is exactly what I want to take back to my guests.
When I bring people into the Bo-Kaap, I don’t just want to show them the beautiful colourful houses and tell them a few facts. I want to help them understand the people, the history, the culture and the stories that make this neighbourhood what it is today.
It was so beneficial to truly take my time and not rush through the area. To stop. Look up. Notice the beautiful verandas and architecture. Wander down the streets and imagine just how many conversations, celebrations, hardships, memories and stories have unfolded behind those doors and on those verandas over the years.
There is so much more to the Bo-Kaap than what meets the eye.
So I really encourage you to visit. ❤️ See the oldest Mosque in South Africa.
Take your time. Have a coffee and a treat. Walk slowly. Look around. And, most importantly, have conversations.
Sometimes the best way to understand a place is simply to stop and listen.
