Meet Makoma Queen Mpekwane, a Conservation Officer whose journey began in the heart of the villages she calls home - landscapes surrounded by natural beauty that sparked her lifelong passion for nature.

From field ranger to acting conservation manager, Makoma’s rise within CapeNature has been driven by her fierce commitment to protecting the environment and uplifting those around her.

🗣️ “Women are natural treasures of this world. To me, being a woman means nurturing with compassion while standing firm against challenges like gender-based violence. Women's Month is a time to honour our achievements and push for greater empowerment.”

Makoma’s advice for women?

Stay true to yourself. Dream boldly. And don’t let limits define you - your future is shaped by the work you put in and the attitude you bring.

Despite a fear of heights, Makoma still takes the Table Mountain and Hartbeespoort cableway whenever she can - because bravery doesn’t mean having no fear, it means showing up anyway.

Her favourite quote:

💬 “The greatest discovery of all time is that a person can change their future by merely changing their attitude.” - Oprah Winfrey

Meet Nkosinathi Moyo, a dedicated field ranger based at Limietberg Nature Reserve, a breathtaking escape in the Boland mountains, known for its fynbos-covered mountain slopes, dramatic cliffs, and indigenous river valleys.

🗣️ "Conservation is not just like any other work, it’s a calling. When I am out in the field doing either rare species monitoring, fighting fires, conducting patrols to prevent biodiversity crimes, or sharing my knowledge through learning and awareness programs, my heart is filled with joy knowing that I have done my part, and nature will be protected for future generations. Conservation is truly life-changing."

While Nkosinathi is deeply passionate about protecting our biodiversity, he admits that he still gets chills whenever he comes across snakes!

Thank you, Nkosinathi, for your bravery, and protecting our natural heritage. 💚

A new outbreak of high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI), commonly referred to as "bird flu" has been reported in the Western Cape, with confirmed cases in Hartlaub’s Gulls and Great White Pelicans.

The public is urged to stay alert and report any sightings of birds showing signs of twitching, shaking, or seizures.

If you come across affected birds:

✅ Record the exact location
✅ Take clear photos or a short video
✅ Note the species, number of birds, and any signs of illness
✅ Report using the DFFE Avian Influenza Reporting Tool: https://zurl.co/MoBTi

⚠️ Please do not touch or attempt to move any sick or dead birds and keep pets away from them, especially in coastal areas.

Your reports are essential to help authorities act swiftly and protect our seabirds 💚

Did you know? Exotic pets like terrapins, goldfish or koi may seem harmless in tanks or ponds, but when they are released into rivers, dams or wetlands (often thinking it is the kind thing to do) they can survive, breed, and cause major ecological problems. These species can spread diseases, prey on local species or destroy habitats.

Some exotic fish like bass, rainbow trout and carp were originally introduced for sport fishing, but they have become highly invasive and are almost impossible to control once established in the wild.

Act now and help us save our indigenous species before it's too late. Together, we can tip the scales and protect our freshwater biodiversity.

Shaped over millions of years, South Africa's rivers and estuaries follow a powerful natural rhythm called breaching - with rainfall flowing down mountains, feeding into rivers, delivering essential nutrients, and eventually reaching the sea.

On 13 August 2025, after generous winter rain, the Klein Estuary in Walker Bay breached naturally - a rare event that occurs roughly every 20 years. Water built up behind the sand berm gave way, releasing a plume of nutrient-rich water that stretched kilometres into the ocean.

This natural breach plays a vital role in supporting fish migration, maintaining estuary health, and sustaining coastal biodiversity.
