Another wonderful Nordic Second Thursday in the books.

Despite a wet winter evening in Cape Town, great conversations flowed as we welcomed new faces from Doha, the UK, and Denmark alongside familiar members of the Nordic House community.

Discussions ranged from sustainability, the film industry, gas and oil, and township property investment to many other topics that make this network such an interesting one to be part of.

Thank you to everyone who joined us. We look forward to seeing you again on the 9th of July!

Tak :-)

Cape Town makes history.

Today, our city was confirmed as the 8th Abbott World Marathon Major and the first ever on African soil.

We are incredibly proud at Nordic House Cape Town and proud to call this city home.

We cannot wait to welcome many more Nordic marathon runners to our shores, to our mountain, our oceans, our people and our unforgettable Cape Town energy.

What a milestone for Cape Town, for South Africa and for Africa.

πŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ͺ Happy Sveriges Nationaldag!

Sweden celebrates its National Day today, honouring two landmark moments: the election of King Gustav Vasa in 1523, which established Sweden as an independent nation, and the adoption of its constitution in 1809.

Across Sweden, blue-and-yellow flags fly proudly, and the Royal Family joins traditional celebrations at Skansen open-air museum in Stockholm, with folk music, dancing, and flag ceremonies.

Two Nordic national days in a row, what a week!

From Cape Town, Nordic House sends warmest wishes to all Swedes near and far. πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦

πŸ‡©πŸ‡° Happy Grundlovsdag!

Today, Denmark celebrates Constitution Day, marking the signing of the Danish Constitution on 5 June 1849, when Denmark peacefully became one of the world's oldest democracies.

Across Denmark, parks fill with picnics, the Dannebrog flies proudly, and open-air political speeches honour the democratic spirit of the day.

We are celebrating all the way from Cape Town, and it is a particularly special day for Nordic House, as our founder, Laura Lekkergaard, is the Honorary Consul of Denmark in Cape Town!

Tillykke med Grundlovsdagen, Danmark! πŸ₯‚

πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈπŸƒβ€β™€οΈ Cape Town. Africa. The World.

The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon 2026 was one for the history books!

Ethiopia swept the elite races, with Mohamed Esa storming to victory in an astonishing 2:04:55, setting a new course record and recording the fastest marathon ever run on African soil. On the women's side, Dera Dida Yami claimed victory in 2:23:18, completing a remarkable Ethiopian double. Three course records fell during an unforgettable weekend of racing.

Beyond the elite performances, there was a combined field of 44,500 participants who competed across all events, runners from all around the world experiencing the energy, beauty and spirit that make Cape Town one of the world's most extraordinary destinations. With record participation, a growing international presence and global attention focused on the Mother City, the event has taken another major step towards becoming Africa's first Abbott World Marathon Majors race.

At Nordic House, we are proud to see Cape Town continue to showcase the very best of South Africa to the world. Events like these strengthen our city's reputation as a place to work, live, study, play, invest and visit.

Congratulations to every runner, volunteer, supporter, organiser and partner who made this extraordinary event possible!

Last week, Nordic House founder and Honorary Consul of the Kingdom of Denmark Laura Lykkegaard had the privilege of attending a special evening hosted by the Honorary Consul of Sweden Carl Fredrik Sammeli in Cape Town to celebrate 30 years of South Africa’s Constitution.

It was an honour - as always - to be with the Swedish Ambassador Anna Karin EngstrΓΆm of Embassy of Sweden in Pretoria there. Her warmth, insight and inspiring presence added enormously to an already exceptional evening.

The fireside conversation was thought-provoking, at times provocative, and filled with meaningful discussion around the South African Constitution, democracy and the future of the country. The questions and engagement from those present made the evening even more impactful.

It was also wonderful to see so many Nordic House members in attendance, alongside such a diverse and interesting group of people from across business, leadership and civil society.

A special mention to Leon Louw for his outstanding contribution, and to Paul Harris, whose insight was truly invaluable throughout the evening.

And as always, it was fantastic to reconnect with Nonkosi Klaas and hear more of her inspiring journey building impact through Bitprop.

Thank you to everyone involved in creating such an important and memorable evening!
