One of the highlights of our past year was developing an international tourism marketing and branding strategy for Gansu Province, China, commissioned by UN Tourism and the Provincial Government of Gansu. Gansu offers a rare blend of ancient Silk Road heritage , dramatic desert and mountain landscapes, and vibrant ethnic cultures. From the painted caves of Dunhuang World Heritage Site to the rainbow hills of Zhangye and Tibetan monasteries in Xiahe, Gansu is a crossroads of history, spirituality, culinary delights and natural beauty—making it one of China's most diverse and untapped tourist destinations.

This month The Journey Tourism Consulting and Management celebrates our 20th Birthday. How time has flown by!. Through the grace of the Almighty we have conducted more than 170 contracted assignments in 42 countries over the past 20 years. 40 of these assignments were in South Africa and the rest internationally. We have worked multiple times in most Sub-Saharan countries and in various other major tourism growth destinations such as India, China, Saudi Arabia and others. Due to our sole focus on tourism destination management and marketing we have built up a highly professional, international network of associates and company partners.
A sincere thanks to every trusted colleague and company who we have worked with over the years. There are too many to list here, but we treasure and appreciate every minute that we have worked together.
We sincerely thank our clients including many national and local governments, UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), IDA - World Bank Group, CBI - Centre for the Promotion of Imports from developing countries, and many others.
As a tribute to tourism in developing tourism countries we are posting a few fond memories of one of our favourite destinations, Ethiopia, for which we developed the national tourism brand, "Land of Origins".

We are delighted that the Heads of State and Tourism Ministers of the 5 countries that make up the Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA), at the recent KAZA Summit approved and signed up to promote the Kavango Zambezi destination brand. The Ministers of Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe all signed a pledge of behalf of their governments to promote Kavango Zambezi as a tourism destination. The brand was commissioned by the KAZA Secretariat and was developed by The Journey and the public and private stakeholders of the area, following a thoroughly consultative process. The brand will now be rolled out and promoted globally, with the support of a wide range of brand partners.

What a privilege for The Journey to be developing the destination and corporate branding for the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA). Having returned from a 2-week trip across the 5 countries that share the most amazing natural and cultural attractions, the dream of establishing the world's largest common conservation zone became a reality for our team. Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe have signed a treaty to make this dream a reality and the KAZA Secretariat, the Member States and the Private Sector are all behind it. Our many stakeholder meetings confirmed their passion and love for this land of wonders. Mike Fabricius

What a privilege and eye-opener it has been for The Journey and our project partners Acorn Consulting to develop Sierra Leone's national tourism brand and domestic and international marketing strategies under the World Bank funded Sierra Leone Economic Diversification Program (SLEDP). We also kick-started the ex*****on with website development (www.sierraleonetourism.com), marketing materials design and a travel influencer and social media campaign. Sierra Leone is blessed with stunning beaches, virgin Upper Guinea rainforests and very interesting cultural variety and traditions. Most importantly, the country is a beacon of freedom, having overcome slavery and social conflict and emerging as a peaceful, multi-party democracy. The brand slogan invites potential travellers to discover the freedom of enjoying by the extensive beaches, forests and colourful community hospitality; and to experience Salone's journey to a free democracy.
