Planning for Peak Season Safari: All You Need to Know

Peak season can be one of the best times for an African safari, but it also needs early planning and flexibility.

During the dry season (May to October), wildlife is often easier to see as animals gather near rivers and waterholes. It is also one of the busiest times to travel, which means popular lodges, guides, room types, and special experiences can book up quickly.

Peak season travel requires planning well ahead.

Here are key tips on planning your peak season safari:

📅 Plan Early
We recommend planning 12 to 18 months ahead.

☀️ Know the Peak Safari Months
Southern Africa’s safari peak season (dry season) generally runs from May to October. East Africa has two dry seasons: January to March and June to October.

🔄 Stay flexible with dates
A small date change can open up better lodge options, smoother flight connections, or stronger overall value.

🏕️ Have a Backup Plan
First-choice properties may not always be available, so it helps for agents or travel advisors to have backup options ready from the start.

👕 Pack in Layers
Safari mornings and evenings can be chilly, while midday can be warm. A light jacket, neutral clothing, comfortable shoes, and sun protection are a great start. For a full checklist, download our safari packing guide before you travel.

There’s a moment off South Africa’s Wild Coast when everything changes. The ocean, calm just minutes before, suddenly starts to move.

Each year, between June and July, billions of sardines swim north, following a band of colder water that forms along the coastline in winter. These cooler conditions suit them better, helping them move, feed, and stay in the right temperature range.

Beneath the surface, they move together in perfect sync. Long silver lines stretch through the water, then pull in tight into round, fast-moving bait balls as predators close in. These shapes change constantly, flashing in the light as the sardines try to stay together.

Then it all begins. Predators, such as sharks, dolphins, seals, whales, and seabirds, punch right through the school, emerging with a bite or two.

This is the Sardine Run – one of the greatest marine events on earth!

South Africa’s coastline is made for surfing.

From the long, clean waves at Jeffreys Bay to beginner-friendly breaks at Muizenberg Beach, there’s something for every level. Durban offers warm water and a consistent swell, while Elands Bay is quieter with a more remote feel.

Every stop brings a different kind of wave.

Happy Africa Day!

Africa isn’t one place. It’s many worlds found across the continent, from oceans and savannahs to cultures and wildlife.

In Cape Town, mornings begin with ocean air and mountain views. In the Serengeti, the day unfolds with herds moving across open plains. Along the Chobe River, elephants gather at the water’s edge as the sun starts to set.

Beyond the wildlife, there’s more to experience. Spend time with the Maasai people, learning about their traditions and daily life. Enjoy wine tastings in the Cape Winelands or explore the thundering waters of Victoria Falls.

Every journey here feels different, and that’s exactly what makes it worth experiencing.

How to plan a last-minute safari? What you need to focus on first:

✨It’s not about rushing to get everything booked. It’s about focusing on the right things first so the rest of the trip comes together naturally. ✨

1. Destination
Look at destinations that offer easy access and more flexibility, as their lodges are usually reliable when it comes to short-notice bookings.

2. Dates
Be flexible with your travel dates, as even a small shift by a day or two can unlock better lodge options and smoother routing.

3. Flights
Use your flight times and dates as the foundation, and build everything else around them.

4. Accommodation
Be open to what’s available. The “perfect” lodge might be booked, but the right location will still give you an incredible experience.

5. Itinerary
Keep your plans simple. Fewer stops mean less time to worry about logistics and more time on settling in and enjoying oneself.

6. The Group
If you’re traveling as a group, focus on staying together at the same accommodation, area, and taking part in the same activities. It makes the journey far more seamless when planning and coordinating.

The dry season in Botswana is here.

Water becomes scarce, and wildlife moves closer to rivers and waterholes. As the bush dries out, animals are easier to spot. In places like the Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park, predator and prey activity increases, making sightings action-packed and exciting.

Wondering where to Eat in Cape Town?

Here are a few restaurants worth adding to your favorites list:

1. Little Fox
A cozy spot set along Cape Town’s wine route. The focus is on sharing plates, with bold flavors and seasonal ingredients. It’s best experienced by ordering a few dishes at a time and enjoying them together around the table.

2. Amura
Set inside the Mount Nelson Hotel, this is a seafood-led experience by Michelin-starred chef Ángel León. The menu explores lesser-known fish and seafood ingredients, with a space designed to evoke Cape Town’s kelp forests.

3. Le Bistrot de Jan
A French-style bistro with a relaxed feel. Simple, well-prepared dishes like chicken pie, fresh fish, and rich sauces make this a good choice for a slower, more comfortable meal.

4. Tannin
A low-key space focused on food and wine pairings. The menu changes often, with straightforward dishes designed to pair well with the wine list.

5. Curate at the Element
Modern and clean in its approach. Curate stands out for its tasting-style menu and thoughtful plating, where each dish is carefully crafted yet easy to enjoy. Refined, without feeling too formal.

Group Travel: Best Destinations for Last-Minute Safaris

Planning a last-minute safari doesn’t mean starting from scratch. Some destinations make it effortless, especially if you’re traveling as a group. These destinations offer easy access and flexibility, and they don’t rely too heavily on timing.

Kruger National Park is one of the simplest. Frequent flights, road transfers, and a wide range of lodges mean groups can find space quickly without overcomplicating logistics.

In the Maasai Mara National Reserve, wildlife is consistent year-round, so you’re not relying on a single season to have a rewarding experience. The Serengeti National Park works because of its scale. It’s vast, with multiple regions and camps, which means availability is often spread out.

Victoria Falls also offers frequent flights, many accommodation options, and shared experiences beyond game drives, from natural wonders, river cruises, guided walks, and scenic viewpoints that allow travelers to slow down together.

Kids' Activities in Cape Town: Where to Start

Cape Town makes traveling with kids feel easy, as it offers the right mix of nature, play, and wonder. It is also a very convenient destination because everything flows naturally from one experience to the next.

Start with the penguins at Boulders Beach, where kids can watch them waddle between the rocks and swim in the shallows. From there, head to the V&A Waterfront for a visit to the Two Oceans Aquarium, followed by a ride on the Cape Wheel or even a short boat trip.

Take the cable car up Table Mountain for wide-open views and easy walks at the top. Then slow things down at parks like Green Point Urban Park or Blue Train Park, where there’s space to run, climb, and play.

For something more active, free-wheel down slopes on a mountain scooter, or take on obstacle courses set among trees or elevated structures. And when it’s time to unwind, beaches like Muizenberg offer gentle waves, colorful huts, and plenty of space to settle in.

It’s a mix that works without overplanning.

Mother’s Day looks a little different in the wild for elephants.

An elephant stays close to her calf, guiding it with a steady touch of her trunk. She shows them where to walk, what to eat, and when to move with the herd.

Calves can stand within minutes of birth but rely on their mothers for years, feeding on milk for up to two to four years while they learn how to survive. Other females assist the mother elephant where they can, keeping calves close and protected as the herd moves.

Across the wild, the instinct is the same: to protect, guide, and teach. Motherhood, in its natural form.
