In August 1486 the Portuguese navigator, Bartholomeu Dias, set sail from the Tagus River at Lisbon with his fleet of two small vessels and a cargo ship. The objective of his journey was to sail round the southern point of Africa in order find a seaway and a trade route to India . At Angra Pequena (now Lüderitzbucht , Namibia ) he erected a cross. Then a tremendous storm forced his ships off course and he and his crew did not reach land until they entered the bay, which is known today as Mossel Bay . It was then that Dias realised that they had already passed the tip of Africa and had actually discovered the sea route to the East. The indigenous Khoi pastoralists fled when they saw the ships entering the bay. On the island of St. Croix near Algoa Bay he also erected a cross and probably kept on sailing until they reached the Fish River in the present Eastern Cape . There the small fleet had to turn back because of insufficient supplies on board. On his return voyage Dias, elated by the realisation of having discovered the sea route to India , changed the name Cabo Tormentoso ‘cape of storms’ to Cabo da boa Esperanza ‘cape of good hope’.

This tour takes you past the beautiful bikini beaches of Sea point and Camps bay, also home to the most expensive real estate in South Africa. Then continuing through the town of Hout Bay – home to the fishing harbours. Then the tour continues through the world famous Chapman’s Peak Drive (if open) a 9 km route with 114 curves, making it one of the most spectacular marine drives in the world. We will stop at the highest point along the way to take photos of the breathtaking sights. With a 200 meter drop on one side of the vehicle and a 200 meter rise on the other side, as we make our way south, following the Atlantic Ocean until we reach Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope. The most romantic meeting place of the two mighty oceans, the Atlantic and the Indian oceans . Arriving at the Cape of Good Hope Nature reserve, you will make your way down to Cape Point. Look out, for pelagic birds of which there are a large variety, zebra, eland, and the many species of reptiles and small mammals. Chacma baboons are common here, especially at the point itself. Don’t be tempted to feed the baboons and rather stay well away, as they can be aggressive.

The Devil's Peak, we begin this hike at the Rhodes Memorial parking lot. Heading towards the steps in the far-left corner, we climb these, and continue towards a T-junction, where we turn right, and keep going, just before we reach the turn-stile we turn left, and this is when we find ourself on the Contour Path. The Newlands Ravine can be a bit of a slog, so we make sure to rest for a few minutes before attempting it.

The vegetation in this area is really special. Peninsula Shale Renosterveld, which is critically endangered, is endemic to the Cape Peninsula—so it grows nowhere else on earth. Urban expansion has now restricted this vegetation even further and it is only found in two locations: Devils Peak and Signal Hill.

The joy of this walk is the forest scenery; the fragrant shade is a big plus on hot days too. You sure can not afford to miss this route. Its far too awesome!!

If you have done the lion's head already, we invite you to join us for Skeleton Gorge route, this is a great hike that will take you up Skeleton Gorge and down Nursery Ravine with steep steps and scrambling up river beds part of the route. The hike does demand a certain degree of fitness but the exertion is well worth it as the terrain and views are magnificent. Starting at Cecilia Forest you will make your way up and across to Skeleton Gorge. You will actually pass the base of Nursery Ravine on your way to Skeleton Gorge. Going up the Gorge is tricky, with two ladders and loose river stones to negotiate as you crisscross your way to the top. At the top you will pass by the Hely-Hutchinson Dam and then cut back down Nursery Valley until you reach Nursery Ravine. Be cautious on your way up and down the two ravines. Take your time and enjoy the scenery of this very memorable walk
