Have you ever wondered why elephants flap their ears?
It’s one of the most important ways an elephant keeps cool. An elephant’s ears are filled with a network of tiny blood vessels, and when they flap their ears, they help move air across this warm blood and cool it before it circulates back through the body.
And in the African heat, that matters. Elephants can spend hours walking, feeding and travelling in temperatures where keeping their body temperature under control is essential.
You’ll often see an elephant flapping its ears more vigorously when it’s hot or after it has been walking for some time. It’s a remarkably simple cooling system for one of Africa’s largest animals.
So the next time you see those enormous ears moving, remember, it’s not just a beautiful display. It’s nature’s very own air-conditioning system.

Victoria Falls is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, but there is so much more to experience here than the Falls themselves.
Here are a few of our favourite Victoria Falls experiences:
🥁 The Boma
An evening of incredible food, drumming and entertainment. From warthog and crocodile to chicken and delicious beef, it’s a real taste of Africa and an experience you won’t forget.
🌅 Pure Africa Zambezi Cruise
One not to miss. There’s something pretty special about cruising along the Zambezi as the sun goes down, drink in hand, watching wildlife along the river. A beautiful way to experience the Zambezi and the incredible surroundings.
🐘 Drinks at the Safari Lodge
Head up to the deck, grab your favourite drink and settle in by the watering hole. If you’re lucky, you can sit and watch elephants coming down to drink while you enjoy the view. It’s one of those simple experiences that stays with you.
Victoria Falls is spectacular, but it’s the combination of the wildlife, food, people, river and experiences that makes a visit truly special. 🇿🇼

Elephants are some of the most incredible animals to simply stop and watch 🐘
The way they interact, play, protect one another, and move together is truly remarkable. Living in close family groups led by female matriarchs, elephants are known for their deep social bonds and strong sense of community.
Young elephants are cared for by the entire herd, not just their mothers, creating a nurturing and protective environment from an early age. They also communicate across long distances through low-frequency vibrations, allowing them to stay connected even when far apart.
Intelligent, gentle, and highly emotional, elephants offer a fascinating glimpse into the importance of connection, loyalty, and community within the natural world.

Just outside Cape Town, at Boulders Beach, you will find a thriving colony of African penguins. These are not ice dwelling birds. They nest on white sand beaches, rest on warm granite boulders and swim in the Atlantic Ocean.
The species found here is the African penguin, also known as the black footed penguin. It is the only penguin species that breeds on the African continent. Their distinctive black and white markings and donkey like bray have earned them the nickname jackass penguins.
