Die Gear
The die gear performs the important function of driving the die at a speed which registers with the rest of the machine. The condition of the teeth of the gear will also determine how “smoothly” the die will function. Hence it is important to ensure that the gear is kept in good repair and that there is no build up of grime between the teeth. If the smooth and free meshing of the gear teeth is restricted in any way, this can result in vibration and bouncing of the die which can result in “gear marks” developing on the die bearers and the anvil. These “gear marks” will negatively affect the die cutting process and will transfer to other dies used on the machine. The gear size or number of teeth on the gear determines its’ repeat length, or the distance the die will travel in a single revolution of the gear. So, if there are any die registration problems, the first thing to check is the gear. Also the size of the gear (its’ pitch diameter) is directly proportional to the O.D. of the die bearers. As the die bearers wear, their O.D. must be monitored to ensure that they remain within specified tolerances for the pitch diameter of the gear
