Thank you Commonwealth War Graves Commission for sharing the information on The Labour Corps Memorial which is a fairly recent addition to the Company Gardens. It comprises of 1 700 poles, each with the name of a non white man who was signed up to be part of the Labour Corp and sent of mainly to East Africa to support the Allies in WW1 and never returned. They were not allowed to carry weapons but were used as stretcher bearers, kitchen hands and as othe support providers. The CWGC tracked down 7 descendants of the 1 700 men and they give some very touching and real back ground to the lives of the men who never returned and were not acknowledged until this Memorial was established.
