Kindly note, Intaka Island and the Eco-Centre will be closed on Thursday, 15 October, for a private event.

Don’t worry, nature isn’t going anywhere! We’ll be back to our usual adventures on Friday, 16 October, ready to welcome you back for fresh air and feathered friends.

We apologise for any inconvenience and look forward to seeing you back on the island the very next day!

The red-knobbed coot is a very attentive parent and busiest itself all day to make sure its chicks get only the best nutrition.

Red-knobbed coots are omnivores. While they eat land-based or shoreline plants, their primary food sources, such as waterweeds, aquatic invertebrates, and small prey, live in the water.

Coot chicks have colourful heads that act as a visual advertisement. Parents use these bright colours to measure which chicks are strongest and most active.

Come see the coots and chicks for yourself. We're open 7 days a week from 7:30 to 19:00.

DigiOutreach makes a difference at Intaka Island with a new smart weather station.

As Intaka Island marks 30 years of environmental conservation, education and community engagement, we are pleased to announce a generous donation from DigiOutreach, part of Super Group. The R65,000 contribution will fund a METOS 5 smart weather station on the island, giving our team and our visitors access to real-time, site-specific environmental data from the heart of Century City.

Our 16-hectare protected wetland at the heart of Century City, is home to more than 120 bird species and a stretch of protected indigenous fynbos, right in the middle of one of Cape Town's busiest urban nodes.

Walk the trail, spot a few birds from one of the hides, or take our boat through over 8km of canals that flow through the neighbourhood.

It's one of Cape Town's best things to do for a weekend outing, a birding trip, or a family day out, no flight needed.

Calling all young explorers! Get ready to celebrate the arrival of spring at Intaka Island this school holiday. As the days get warmer and nature bursts back into life, we’re inviting young adventurers to discover the sights, sounds and surprises of spring across the wetlands.

Where: Intaka Island Eco-Centre
Who: Kids aged 5 - 12
Dress: Casual and comfortable, but make it Spring!
