Goodbye to Cass Abrahams - the Queen of Cape Malay cooking in the Cape.

Today is a really sad day for our foodie community. We had to say goodbye to Cass. She was my hero & one of the strongest and most inspirational women that I have ever met. My biggest wish is that we as a city embrace our legacy of spices, that we celebrate our traditional dishes and that we pass on our legacy to the kids and the chefs in this city. The younger generation does not realise that a direct impact of apartheid was that the jobs of chefs in our city became a white designated job. Our hotels brought chefs in from the uk and the fashion in the food became dishes like lasagne & chicken à la king - served with a Greek salad and garlic bread! The Cape Malay cuisine disappeared into the kitchens of the community. The kids wanted to be modern and the traditional dishes started disappearing. Cass had fallen in love with a wonderful Muslim man called Jowa. At the time she knew very little about cooking and was not from the Cape. She had to learn fast! She overheard relatives saying “poor Jowa - she does not know how to cook!”

Cass learnt to cook and love the Cape cuisine. Over time she noticed that the dishes were disappearing and felt a strong need to try and document these dishes and keep the tradition as alive. She always joked that the research was easy as she had been delegated to a “coloured” area and could simply go door to door and drink tea with the older generation in her community. She slowly researched the recipes and then cooked and tested the variations she had gotten to find the best one. She became a warrior fighting to keep the cuisine alive. Her cookbook was such a success that she joked that it became the most stolen cookbook in the Western Cape. Cass used her voice to share the love of the cuisine and the recipes. She spoke on the radio, appeared in magazines, cooked at trade shows and went every year to share the spices and stories with the young trainee chefs at Silwood.

For those of you who Chef in the Cape - please honour her legacy by studying the traditional recipes of the Cape. Look up dishes like Dennngvleis. Did you know that the recipe goes back to the late 1600’s in the Cape? Follow her example and reflect our local flavours, spices and traditions in your cooking. Tell our story of our country in your food.

Goodbye dear Cass. We salute you and carry your passion for the Cape’s cuisine forward with us. We will miss you forever.

We send condolences to the family. We love that her daughter Shakira Abrahams Buckley carries her Mom’s passion for cooking through to the next generation. She is a really talented cook and a talented food product creator. May she pass on the wisdom of the spices and carry the flame for the Cape Malay cuisine.

Magical to visit the penguins at Boulders Beach early in the morning on a peninsula tour. It felt like we were watching a nature documentary.

Wow the Marine Hotel in Hermanus is looking so gorgeous after its refurb!!! She is such a grand old lady perched on the cliffs. The location is perfect for whale watching and for cold water swims in the tidal pool in the sea!!
