Mauritius lifts travel ban for South Africa

Port-Louis, 10 September 2021.

The travel ban between South Africa and Mauritius has been lifted today (10 September). South Africans can now travel to Mauritius on authorised commercial flights without first having to spend fifteen (15) days outside the country.

“We welcome the decision by the Mauritian government. South Africa remains a proximity and priority market for tourism on the island. We are delighted that we will be able to restart our long-standing relationship after an 18-month ban on travel,” says Arvind Bundhun, Director of the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA).

Authorised commercial flights from South Africa to Mauritius will commence on 01 October 2021 namely Air Mauritius, Comair South Africa, SAA and Fly Safair.

From 01 October 2021, fully vaccinated travellers from South Africa, will be allowed to stay at any hotel, resort or accommodation of their choice and move freely around the island.

Unvaccinated travellers will have to undergo 14 days quarantine in a state designated quarantine facility.

“Mauritius has worked hard to develop and implement protocols that will keep both travellers and citizens as safe as possible from Covid-19 and the effects of the pandemic. Travellers can be assured of Government’s commitment to the health and safety of all travellers,” says Arvind Bundhun.

MAURITIUS WILL OPEN FOR INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL ON 15 JULY 2021

Port Louis, Mauritius, 11 June 2021 – Mauritius will be welcoming international travellers as from 15 July 2021. The island will be opening in phases during 2021 and the first phase, from 15 July to 30 September 2021, will enable vaccinated travellers to enjoy a resort holiday on the island.

Holidaymakers will be able to enjoy facilities within their chosen resort premises, including the swimming pool and beach. If guests stay for more than 14 days and have negative PCR tests during their stay in the resort, they will be able to explore the island’s attractions thereafter. However, for shorter stays, they may leave the resort earlier to travel back home.

A list of pre-approved Covid-19 safe resorts will be available from 20 June 2021 at www.mauritiusnow.com.

Travellers to Mauritius aged 18 years or over must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19. They must undergo a PCR test between 5 and 7 days before departure and a negative result is required to travel to the island. Travellers will also have a PCR test on arrival at the airport in Mauritius and on days 7 and 14 of their resort holiday, as applicable.

For Phase 2, from 01 October 2021, vaccinated travellers will be allowed entry into the country without restrictions upon presentation of a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours before departure.

Unvaccinated travellers will be subject to the 14 day in-room quarantine for both Phases 1 and 2 until further notice.

The announcement follows the acceleration of the vaccination campaign and the progress made towards herd immunity by the end of September. Frontliners within the tourism industry were prioritised during the vaccine rollout. This has enabled a prompt and safe restart of the Mauritius tourism industry.

The country’s response to the pandemic ranked among one of the best in the world, as the Mauritian Government responded promptly with stringent control measures and protocols. The safety of Mauritians and visitors has been a top priority since the outbreak of Covid-19 and the success is the result of a joint effort by the Mauritian Government and the island’s population.

MAURITIUS ON TRACK TO MEET ITS VACCINATION TARGET AS IT TAKES DELIVERY OF 500,000 DOSES OF THE SINOPHARM VACCINE

Port Louis, 21 May 2021 – Mauritius has taken delivery of 500,000 doses of the Sinopharm vaccine from the Chinese manufacturer. This follows the 100,000 doses that the Chinese government graciously offered to Mauritius.

The World Health Organisation granted emergency approval to Sinopharm two weeks ago. Already, the vaccine has been successfully administered to millions of people around the world.

The total number of persons vaccinated in Mauritius now exceeds 220,000. With the new consignment, 250,000 more persons will be able to receive the jab in the coming months.

More vaccine consignments are expected, which means that Mauritius is on track to vaccinate 700,000 persons in the coming months. This is the recommended threshold for the population to reach herd immunity.

Mauritius is planning to reopen the country to tourism as from mid-2021. Tourism operators are working in close collaboration with government to finalise travel protocols and complete arrangements for a prompt restart of the industry.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, Mauritius has upheld the safety of visitors and locals as its topmost priority. For this reason, achieving herd immunity through vaccination is considered as crucial.
