Yesterday we hosted European travel media and travel agents on a culinary exploration of , with .uk. Indian, Pan-African and Soweto influences on the city’s culinary traditions were explored and tasted, and a pallette cleanser visit to the Credwo Mutwa Village and an aerial perspective on Soweto and the city from the Oppenheimer Tower helped provide historical context. For the final part of the day we visited at their HQ to learn about their approach to business incubation, asset based community development that can scale. RLabs was started in Bridgetown Athlone in 2008 and now has a global footprint. One of their biggest incubation success stories, , a blockchain digital rewards system, gave a presentation on their business journey from Mitchells Plain to the world.

If you don’t already know about on Long Street in Cape Town, make it a priority to visit. It’s hard to express thoroughly the joy of sitting in a small wine bar looking at a wall of wines telling a totally different story of the wine industry in South Africa that we are used to, while Patrice Lumumba smiles down upon patrons from the wall, and Abdullah Ibrahim plays on the sound system. Kind of like walking into the tasting room so many years go and the first thing you saw was Sol Plaatje on the wall, there is this rush of resonance and joyous discord as the dominant narrative on wine starts to crumble. To talk winemakers with the waiter like talking about artists at a new exhibition opening, and to experience patrons celebrating and others… this is a wine bar that enriches on many levels when you visit.

We are delighted to share that by will feature as part of our starting in 2026. Mahalia is part of a collective of specialist small batch producers operating out of in the wine region. She’s on her way home to Limpopo this month to collect a batch of large clay amphora that will be used to ferment a new batch of wines from the 2025 harvest. Exciting things to come.
