Wesgro is spotlighting young entrepreneurs who are unlocking economic opportunity by supporting business growth, innovation and job creation across Cape Town and the Western Cape.

Egla Ntumba and Jill Curr are the co-founders of MsFiT Ventures, a Cape Town-based private credit fund providing working capital and trade finance solutions to female-led and gender-diverse SMEs.

Having spent their careers in the investment sector, the duo recognised a significant funding gap facing entrepreneurs. With less than 10% of venture capital funding reaching female-founded businesses and many SMEs struggling to access growth capital, they launched MsFiT Ventures in 2024 to support what they call the "misfits" โ€“ businesses with strong potential that are often overlooked by traditional funding models.

Since launching, MsFiT Ventures has secured an anchor investor for its R55.5 million loan book and has already invested in four growing businesses.

Being based in Cape Town has also played an important role in their growth journey.

"Cape Town is the hub of startup activity in South Africa. Being based here has allowed us to meet a lot of interesting people from all over the world and to attend many conferences where we've learned a lot and met investors who backed our fund."

Their work highlights the important role that access to finance plays in supporting entrepreneurship, business growth and job creation. Looking ahead, MsFiT Ventures aims to help create 1,000 new jobs over the next five years while sustaining more than 300 existing jobs.

"Our objective is for those jobs, and the growth of our portfolio SMEs, to provide economic access and inclusion for those communities that would have otherwise been left behind."

The founders also emphasise the importance of mentorship, collaboration and strong support networks in building a successful business.

"Building any kind of business truly takes a village. We have had mentors whose advice was invaluable in the beginning, and as we have grown, we have continued to learn from new mentors who can help us navigate the challenges of each stage. Support has been a game changer for us and our journey."

As Wesgro's teams engage with businesses across key strategic markets, in collaboration with industry partners, several clear trends are emerging that are shaping the future of tourism.

Tourism is evolving beyond destination marketing towards resilience, competitiveness and long-term sustainability. Key trends shaping the sector include:

โœ… Beyond Marketing. Building Resilience: The global tourism conversation is shifting from destination marketing alone towards destination resilience, competitiveness and long-term sustainability

โœ… Data is a strategic asset: Understanding traveller intent, booking behaviour, dispersal patterns, & conversion metrics is becoming central to smarter tourism growth. The sector is moving from soft metrics toward measurable economic impact

โœ… Digital trust is the new currency: As AI reshapes how travellers discover and plan, destination organisations that invest in credible, data-led storytelling & seamless digital user journeys will remain the trusted voice in a noisy information environment

โœ… AI-readable websites: A well-structured digital presence is essential to be included in AI discovery systems

โœ… Community inclusion is competitive advantage: Tourism growth that meaningfully includes local communities, protects local identity & distributes economic benefit builds resilient, differentiated destinations over the long term

โœ… Co-ordination across the ecosystem: Industry, government and communities must move in the same direction

By building a tourism sector that is resilient, future-ready and globally competitive, we can unlock greater economic opportunities for businesses and communities across the province.

This Youth Month, Wesgro continues to shine a spotlight on young changemakers who are driving innovation, creating opportunities, and contributing to economic growth across Cape Town and the Western Cape.

Mbasa Siyaka is the Director of Mzansi Restaurant, an award-winning family-owned establishment in the heart of Langa Township. Recipient of Cape Town Tourism's Board Development Fund Award, the restaurant has grown into far more than a dining destination, offering visitors an authentic experience of the culture, heritage and hospitality of one of Cape Town's oldest townships.

Building on a vision first sparked by his grandmother and later developed by his parents, Mbasa recognised an opportunity to harness tourism as a catalyst for local economic development. Established in 2008, Mzansi Restaurant was created to offer visitors an authentic cultural experience while generating jobs, supporting local businesses, and ensuring tourism spend remains within the township economy.

Today, the restaurant serves traditional Xhosa cuisine prepared by four local "mamas", employs township residents, and works with local artists, suppliers and musicians to create a uniquely local tourism experience.

Like many township businesses, Mzansi Restaurant has faced challenges ranging from transport accessibility and limited visibility to funding constraints and access to broader markets. Through strong partnerships and community collaboration, the business has continued to grow while strengthening Langa's tourism ecosystem.

"Township economies play a major role in tourism, job creation and cultural industries. At Mzansi, we work with local artists, musicians and suppliers, which means money circulates within the township. That kind of ecosystem contributes directly to the wider Western Cape economy through inclusive growth."

He also believes greater access to funding, exposure and inclusion in tourism platforms will help more township entrepreneurs unlock their full potential.

Looking ahead, Mbasa hopes to expand Mzansi Restaurant's tourism offering and off-site catering services, creating more jobs and strengthening the positive impact of tourism within the community.

At a recent Wesgro Town Hall, our graduate interns took centre stage, and they owned it.

Representing teams from across the agency, these young professionals shared how real-world exposure is shaping their understanding of economic growth, not just in theory, but in practice.

Through mentorship, hands-on experience, and immersion in a high-performance environment, they are building technical capabilities, but more importantly, something harder to teach: confidence, adaptability, and clarity of purpose.

At Wesgro, we believe that unlocking inclusive and sustainable economic growth starts with people. Particularly our youth.

Programmes like our graduate internship initiative are not just about bridging the gap between education and employment. They are about equipping the next generation with the tools, experience, and mindset to lead in a rapidly evolving world of work, and to contribute meaningfully to building a more competitive, inclusive Western Cape economy.

That is exactly where it starts.

Wesgro congratulates the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon on its confirmation as the eighth Abbott World Marathon Major and the first on African soil.

This milestone is more than a sporting achievement. It reinforces Cape Town and the Western Capeโ€™s position as a world-class destination capable of hosting events alongside the likes of Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, Sydney and New York.

Beyond race day, the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon is projected to contribute approximately R800 million in local travel, accommodation and meals alone, highlighting the catalytic role that major events play in driving tourism growth, attracting international visitors, and unlocking economic opportunities across the Western Cape.

We commend the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon team, Sanlam, the City of Cape Town, volunteers, partners, and communities whose collective efforts have made this achievement possible.

We look forward to welcoming runners from around the world to experience Cape Town and the Western Cape โ€“ with love from the locals.

Wesgro was honoured to participate in the inaugural South Africaโ€“Italy Agricultural Business Forum, signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Italian Trade Agency.

The MoU sets the foundation for enhanced collaboration in trade promotion, investment facilitation, sector partnerships, and business-to-business connectivity between Italy and the Western Cape. This strongly aligns with Wesgro's strategy to:

โžก๏ธ Attract new investment from key global source markets into priority sectors
โžก๏ธ Support Western Cape businesses to expand across tourism, trade and investment
โžก๏ธ Leverage strategic partnerships to unlock access to high-growth global markets, strengthen networks, and crowd in private sector funding

We are proud to support a pipeline of Italian companies investing in the province, particularly in agricultural equipment and the circular economy. The recent announcement of SDF Groupโ€™s first South African office in Paarl (Drakenstein Municipality) further reinforces the Western Capeโ€™s position as a globally competitive agricultural hub.

Key insights on the Italyโ€“Western Cape relationship include:

โœ… Tourism: Italy remains a high-value source market, ranking among the Western Cape's top 10 international source markets, with 32,258 tourists from Italy visiting the province in 2025 and contributing USD29.08 million (SA Tourism, 2026)
โœ… Trade: The Western Cape exported USD196.40 million worth of goods to Italy in 2025, with growth driven by agri and marine products such as fish, citrus, and value-added goods (Quantec, 2026)
โœ… Investment: Italian investment in South Africa totals USD2.07 billion across 25 projects between January 2016 and April 2026, with USD103 million invested in the Western Cape, particularly in renewable energy and textile according to data from fDi Markets, a service from The Financial Times (2026)

The signing ceremony between Wesgro CEO, Wrenelle Stander and the President of Italian Trade Agency, Matteo Zoppas was attended by H.E. John Steenhuisen (Minister for Agriculture of South Africa), H.E. Francesco Lollobrigida (Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry of Italy), H.E. As part of Youth Month, Wesgro is spotlighting young changemakers who are driving innovation, creating opportunities and contributing to economic growth across Cape Town and the Western Cape.

Johannesburg-born twins Busisiwe and Gugu Ngcelwane are co-founders of Twin Venture, a tourism and adventure company based in Atlantis that creates memorable adventure experiences, including quad-biking and sandboarding โ€“ showcasing the region's natural beauty.

Inspired by the need to create opportunities in the face of high youth unemployment, the Ngcelwane twins launched their business in 2021, just one month after falling in love with Cape Town during a visit to the city.

Through their venture, they aim to make adventure tourism more accessible, support local communities, and create opportunities for other young people in tourism and entrepreneurship.

Their story demonstrates the powerful multiplier effect of tourism. Today, Twin Venture contributes to local economic activity by supporting suppliers and service providers, promoting local destinations and helping create employment opportunities.

"The Western Cape is one of the world's leading tourism destinations, offering incredible natural beauty, diverse experiences and a strong entrepreneurial ecosystem. Being based here has provided us with access to opportunities, partnerships and a supportive tourism network that has helped our business grow."

Their message to aspiring entrepreneurs: Start with what you have, stay consistent, and don't be afraid to ask for help. Every successful business starts with a single step.
