Wesgro proudly represented the Western Cape at the Africa Singapore Business Forum (ASBF) – the premier platform advancing trade, investment, and partnerships between Africa and Asia.

The Forum advanced three strategic goals:
✅ Showcasing Africa’s high-growth opportunities to Southeast Asia
✅ Catalysing connections and deal flow between the two regions
✅ Anchoring Africa-focused initiatives and events in Asia

Keynotes by H.E. John Dramani Mahama, President of Ghana; Mr. Chuan Teck Lee, Chairman of Enterprise Singapore; and Ms. Grace Fu’s Minister for Sustainability and Trade Relations, underscored the significance of this cross-continental dialogue.

Beyond the Forum, Wesgro engaged with Enterprise Singapore, the Singapore Tourism Board, and explored innovation at the DHL Innovation Centre. The mission concluded with a CEO Roundtable, bringing together senior investors and business leaders from South Africa and Singapore to deepen long-term partnerships.

📌 A standout moment was Cape Karoo International, a leading Western Cape exporter of ostrich-derived goods, showcasing how our region is meeting Asia’s rising demand for premium, traceable food and beverage products.

💬 Wesgro CEO, Wrenelle Stander: “Singapore is a strategic gateway into Asia. A hub of innovation, a beacon of trade, and a country that values quality, reliability, and sustainability. These are values the Western Cape proudly shares.”

With Western Cape exports to Singapore reaching ZAR 1.61 billion in 2023, the partnership is already significant. Looking ahead, the AfCFTA will amplify this potential , opening access to a US$3.4 trillion market.

Wesgro hosted a successful Regional Tourism Forum Winter School in Cape Town, under the theme “Unlocking Growth from New Markets: China.”

The forum brought together regional and local tourism offices alongside public and private sector partners for a day of collaboration and shared insights.

📌 Why China matters:
Gcobani Mancotywa, Regional General Manager for Asia Pacific at South African Tourism, highlighted China’s position as one of the world’s fastest - growing outbound markets - with unique traveller behaviours, routes to market, and partnership opportunities that South Africa must strategically align with.

📌 Inclusive growth in action:
Delegates also engaged directly with community tourism businesses in Langa, experiencing authentic cultural and heritage offerings that resonate strongly with Chinese travellers. These stories underline how local participation is essential to capturing and sustaining high-value markets.

By combining collaboration, market intelligence, and community-driven experiences, the RTO Winter School reaffirmed the Western Cape’s commitment to growing tourism from new markets, while ensuring growth is both inclusive and sustainable.

Supporting the mission to unlock access to new markets, Wesgro participated in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) Business Expo and Conference in Yokohama, contributing to South Africa’s economic relationship with Japan.

Africa’s growth story was in focus, with the AfCFTA set to open major opportunities as the population rises to 2.5 billion by 2050. South Africa was highlighted as the ideal launchpad for Japanese companies expanding across the continent.

A key highlight was witnessing the MoU signing between Fujifilm’s NURA health and Cape Town-based InuGroup, paving the way for Africa’s first AI-powered NURA health screening centre in Cape Town.

TICAD9 also showcased exciting investment opportunities across Food & Beverage (including agriculture), Life Sciences and Health, Mobility, Logistics, Tech, and the Green Economy — all priority sectors for Cape Town and the Western Cape. South Africa’s Green Hydrogen sector and growing Japanese VC interest in tech emerged as particularly prominent themes.

Wesgro looks forward to deepening engagement with JETRO - Japan External Trade Organization , the Japanese Chamber of Commerce in South Africa, and its members to further strengthen trade and investment ties with Japan.

‘‘What if we stopped seeing waste as something to discard, and started recognising it as a resource we haven’t fully unlocked?''

‘‘That’s the mindset shift at the core of the circular economy. Rather than following the traditional take-make-dispose model, the circular approach keeps materials, products, and resources in use for as long as possible. It’s built on three key principles: eliminating waste by design, regenerating natural systems, and rethinking industries to focus on reuse, repair, and recycling,’’ says Wesgro CEO, Wrenelle Stander.

She adds, ‘‘Cape Town and the Western Cape is well placed to lead Africa’s circular transition. Strong public-private partnerships, a vibrant innovation ecosystem, and deep expertise in green industries support this potential. The circular economy should not be viewed as an afterthought but as a core part of our growth strategy.’’

Wesgro was honoured to be part of the launch of the Western Cape Investment Summit at a Business Breakfast held at the JSE last week, bringing together the Western Cape Government, national partners (DTIC and BrandSA), the NBI, the diplomatic corps, and private sector companies.

In his opening address, Minister of Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism, Dr Ivan Meyer Meyer emphasised the province’s commitment to drive investment, be responsive to business needs, and support job creation through these efforts.

Wesgro’s Chief Foreign Direct Investment Officer, JP van der Merwe, highlighted the scale of the African growth story: with the continent’s population set to reach 2.5 billion by 2050—one quarter of the world’s total—and Sub-Saharan Africa’s economy projected to more than double to USD 4.5 trillion by 2040, global businesses have a significant opportunity to expand through the Western Cape.

The summit will connect investors with project owners to unlock opportunities, while uniting government, business associations, and the diplomatic corps behind the provincial Growth for Jobs (G4J) strategy.
