Company’s Garden
Established in 1652 by the Dutch East India Company, Company’s Garden was created to supply fresh produce to ships sailing around the Cape. Today, it is one of Cape Town’s oldest public spaces and a living link to the city’s colonial and botanical history.

Cecil Rhodes envisioned a continuous British-controlled route from Cape Town to Cairo, linked by rail and telegraph. The Cape-to-Cairo plan symbolized imperial ambition in the late 19th century and remains a subject of historical debate due to its colonial context.

The Delville Wood Memorial commemorates the sacrifice of South African soldiers who fought at Battle of Delville Wood in 1916 during World War I. It serves as a place of remembrance for the heavy losses endured during one of the war’s most intense battles.

War graves and memorials
The Company’s Garden also contains memorials and commemorative spaces honoring those who served and died in military conflicts. These sites reflect South Africa’s connection to both World Wars and preserve the memory of individuals whose service and sacrifice shaped the country’s wartime history.
