At first glance, the Salineras de Maras look almost otherworldly.

Thousands of small pools cascade down the mountainside, each one catching the light differently.

But this isn’t a modern salt factory.

For centuries, salty water has flowed naturally from a spring in the mountains. The water is channelled into thousands of shallow pools, where the Andean sun does the work — slowly evaporating the water and leaving salt crystals behind.

And it’s not just a relic of the past. The pools are still being worked today — a centuries-old system still producing salt.

Is a love for something discovered, or is it already there waiting to be awakened?

For GP, perhaps it was a little of both.

Every June school holiday meant a family trip to Kruger National Park. Then, at just 12 years old, he had the opportunity to travel to Europe with his parents.

An amazing guide on that trip left a lasting impression, showing GP how much a guide can add to the experience of discovering a new place.

Adventure and international travel became part of his story. And somewhere along the way, that love for travel grew into a passion for guiding others.

Today, GP gets to share that passion by helping others discover the places, people and experiences that make a journey memorable.

Every journey has a beginning.

For Nancy , the first seed of travel was planted in childhood.

With an Argentinian mom and a Peruvian dad, travel was simply part of life — visiting family meant crossing borders, countries and long stretches of road to get there.

Those early road trips through South America became more than journeys to a destination. They shaped a lifelong love for discovering places, people and the stories that connect us.

And perhaps that’s where it all began — not with a passport, but with a family, a road and somewhere to go.

What makes a good tour guide?

GP has spent nearly two decades leading travellers through Africa.

But being a good guide is about more than knowing the roads, the history or where to find the best wildlife.

It’s caring about the people travelling with you.

Recently, the night before a frightening incident on tour, GP lay awake praying for his group.

He didn’t know what the next day would bring.

But he knew one thing: these were people entrusted to his care.

Experience matters. Knowledge matters. But so do awareness, calmness, compassion — and genuinely caring about the people in your vehicle.

Because a great guide doesn’t just lead the journey.

He carries responsibility for the people on it.

When Nancy's asked, "What's your favourite thing about South Africa?"

Most people expect Nancy to say the Big Five.

And yes, seeing a leopard draped over a tree or elephants crossing the road never gets old.

But that's not her favourite part.

"My favourite part is the feeling the bush gives you."

As a Peruvian, South Africa was a world away from the Andes, the Sacred Valley, and the ancient streets of Cusco. Yet somewhere between the first sunrise game drive and the last golden African sunset, the bush found a place in her heart.

Out here, life slows down.

You learn to listen more than you speak. To wait. To notice. To marvel at creation in all its beauty.

Every game drive is different. Every turn in the road holds the possibility of something extraordinary.

That's what Nancy loves most.

Not just the wildlife.

The sense of wonder.

People often expect GP to answer with Machu Picchu or the breathtaking mountain views.

But his answer is much simpler.

"My favourite part of Cusco is seeing it through Nancy's eyes."

As a South African, Peru wasn't part of GP's story growing up. But over the years, Nancy has introduced him to the people, traditions, flavours, history, and faith that make this city so much more than a beautiful destination.

Standing in front of Cusco Cathedral, it's impossible not to marvel at its beauty. Yet what makes this place truly special isn't just the architecture—it's the centuries of stories, cultures, and lives that have shaped it.

That's what GP loves most about Peru.
