Situated in the beautiful Banhoek valley down a meandering country road, Oldenburg wine estate has to have one of the most spectacular settings. It is worth doing the trip just to stand on the thick emerald carpet-like lawn and gaze at the exquisite fynbos garden and the mountains rising before you.

But don’t leave before you have tasted their excellent award-wining wines, my personal favourite being Una V (chardonnay) named after the family member and iconic S.A. gardener 🐞Una Van Der Spuy (of Oude Nektar fame)

A striking photogenic structure perched on the slopes of Paarl Mountain in the Western Cape, The Taalmonument (Afrikaans Language Monument) was erected to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Afrikaans becoming an official language distinct from Dutch.

The monument’s dramatic tapering forms symbolise the diverse cultural and linguistic influences—European, African and Malay—that shaped the Afrikaans language

Designed by architect Jan van Wijk as part of an architectural competition, he was inspired by the landscape and the words of writers CJ Langenhoven and NP van Wyk Louw.

Surrounded by so many fabulous wine farms, the Taalmonument is worth a visit as part of your Cape Winelands tour with Footsteps to Freedom👣

You might say it’s understated, you might call it unpretentious, you would definitely call it authentic.

Kleinood reveals itself rather than announces itself. Tucked behind an old white-washed stone wall and plenty of luscious trees, you discover the magic bit by bit as you enter through the wrought iron gate in the high white wall.

The path will lead you past the duckpond through the garden into the wine tasting room, then into the vineyards where you sit & sip their lovely Tamboerskloof range whilst you gaze at the mountains

One of Cape Town's most interesting museums.

Whether you're in the medical field or not, this museum superbly illustrates one of the most exciting and important times in south Africa and in medical science in general.

It convincingly recreates the brilliance and trailblazing spirit of Dr Chris Barnard and his incredible team.

Well worth a visit!
