Besides the amazing scenery and beautiful coastal drives, Cape Town offers tranquility in the valley of Franschhoek.

Huguenots were settled by Simon van Der Stel in this area, given the name French Corner.

It also went through forced removals during Apartheid.

Through the years, Franschhoek continues to give you that sense of calmness and relaxing atmosphere.

From Sahistory.

This Day in History: 19 May 1659

With the coming of the Dutch settlers, the Khoikhoi faced a stronger demand for their cattle. Trade disputes and charges of theft caused great tension between colonists and the Khoikhoi who feared that the settlement of free burghers (farmers) in 1657 would eventually deprive them of their valuable pastures and watering places.

Into this increasingly volatile situation stepped a Goring-haiqua (Khoikhoi group) named Doman, who was sent to Batavia to learn to become an interpreter in about 1657. Since he had witnessed first hand the capacity of the Dutch to reduce indigenous people to positions of servitude, he became a staunch opponent of European colonisation.

Unfortunately for Doman, his earlier attempts at Khoikhoi trade with the Dutch, exclusive to the peninsular Khoikhoi groups, left him dangerously short of allies. Therefore he could not persuade local chief Gogosoa to attack the Dutch. However, Doman was able to persuade some of the younger leaders to join him in what he regarded as a 'war of liberation'.

On a cold and drizzling day on 19 May 1659, the Khoikhoi carried out a series of raids on the free burghers' herds. Doman had waited for rainy weather, knowing that the Dutch matchlock muskets could not be fired in the rain with damp powder.

The First Khoikhoi-Dutch War followed, which lasted almost a year and resulted in only a few deaths. Initiative lay chiefly with the Khoikhoi, who attacked, often in groups of several hundred. Instructed by Doman, who had witnessed Dutch military tactics in Java, they darted about erratically to frustrate Dutch marksmen.

Commander Van Riebeeck responded with defensive tactics, withdrawing the free burghers to the fort, temporarily arming the slaves (an extraordinarily risky measure), and building a strong kraal to protect the colony's remaining livestock.

Lacking fi****ms and unwilling to storm the central fort, the Khoikhoi eventually signalled their willingness to parley. A peace was negotiated, and the war had ended in a stalemate. The Khoikhoi returned no livestock seized during the war and paid no reparations. Yet they did accept the continued European occupation of the Cape peninsula, a threat to their perseverance as an independent people.

The Dutch erected fortified posts and planted almond hedges (some of which still survive) to prevent cattle being driven off again. Khoikhoi were obliged to use specified routes and paths, and to enter the settlement only at certain guarded gaps in the hedge.

Horses which arrived from Batavia gave the colonists the mobility they had lacked in the war, and expeditions from the fort became longer and more frequent. As trading contacts were established with more Khoikhoi groups, the settlement gradually became independent of the Peninsular Khoikhoi, whose wealth and importance waned rapidly.

Im very excited about this, very!

Attended the much anticipated book launch, or rather the launch of the first Trilingual Dictionary of Kaaps(TDK) at the Castle of Good Hope .

If you followed some of my earlier posts, I spoke about low Dutch and Hotnotstaal that predates the language we know today as Afrikaans. Even the parents and elders of this group who wanted to enforce this language, was ridiculed. It was imperative that they had their own identity and language, as too many were using this 'ugly' 'throw up' language, while being known simply as boere.

Quinton Williams, the author alongside others, has been researching for years to make it possible for the original Cape language to be accepted, the same as the colonial Afrikaans. It will also help our Kaaps speaking students to not be restricted and ridiculed for not speaking the pure colonial language. Cape Coloureds'(Camissa Africans) language is close to the original 'low Dutch, 'kitchen Dutch' and Hotnotstaal.

The 'beast' or 'slave' language was purified for European consumption, proven in the archives. It took the Boere descendants almost 50 years to accept the term 'Afrikaner', after all, who would want to be associated with a 'lower race'. Same as the term coloured, it was forced, written in law and when the time came when this group could let go of this term, it was already a part of who they are. That's why we have 'proudly Afrikaner' and 'proudly Coloured' still attracting crowds.

It was an eventful day as I got to meet the role players, as well as one of the legends of the Cape Flats, DJ Ready D !
Our original Hip Hop legend. πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦
Uncle Deon, your work and continuity in the business is legendary! My kind sir, you are appreciated!

I got my book signed and enjoyed the atmosphere. We had some moments where we had tears of joy and anger towards the past, but we understand the mission.
Bring Kaaps back!
After all, it is historically a part of the (Coloured) Camissa African people. The original 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th century language.

Thank you Gareth!

What a milestone for parents, who came to visit Cape Town for the first time, thanks to Gareth for his cool gesture.

They absolutely loved it! Irrespective of bad publicity, Cape Town will surprise and leave you in awe.

For this, we have become good friends.

Do not miss this!

For years the Archives has been open for visitors to access their ancestors' documents and information.

The Archives in Roeland street holds important information dating back to before the arrival in 1652. I have found so much information that I can reveal that parts of my ancestors is proven with my DNA test.

Please, if you need to find out more about yourself or your ancestors, try to attend.
After this training, you can sit in the comfort of your home and research the rest.

Our grandparents/parents made us play outside when we would ask questions like these.
Now you can find out yourself!
