🎨 International Disability Day – Street Art Tour with Winston Fani

Recently, , Briony from , and I had the privilege of going on a street art tour with Winston Fani — Africa’s first qualified blind tour guide. 🎨✨

Winston’s groundbreaking journey was made possible through the support of , who funded his studies. Today, he stands as a powerful example of what becomes possible when barriers are removed and talent is given space to flourish.

His work is opening doors for more blind and visually impaired people to see tourism not only as something to experience — but as an industry they can be part of.

As we mark International Day of Persons with Disabilities, this feels especially meaningful.

Because disability isn’t caused by the person.
Disability is caused by the barriers society creates.
Physical barriers. Attitudinal barriers. Systemic barriers.

Today isn’t about inspiration — it’s about accountability and action.

💡 How we can all help remove barriers:

• Design with inclusion from the start — not as an afterthought and include persons with disabilities from the start.
• Train staff to understand access needs, not just policies.
• Hire diversely — representation changes industries.
• Listen to lived experiences — they’re the best experts.
• Support businesses that prioritise accessibility — and encourage others to do the same.

Winston’s tour showed us what an inclusive future for tourism can look like.
A future where access isn’t a luxury — it’s the standard.

Afrikoa Truffle & Deetlefs Wine Pairing

A taste of pure indulgence in Cape Town 🍷🍫

We had the pleasure of experiencing the Afrikoa Truffle & Deetlefs Wine Pairing — and it was absolutely delicious! Each sip and bite was a perfect harmony, but the standout for me?
👉 The Pinotage with the dark cocoa truffle — rich, smooth, and full of those beautiful coffee notes I adore. ☕️💫

At just R100 per person, this is such a fun and affordable experience to share with friends — a true treat for the senses!

And the best part? It’s accessible to everyone ✅

♿️ Accessibility Highlights:
✅ Step-free drop-off zone
✅ Accessible entrance
✅ Spacious, accessible bathroom
✅ Smooth indoor pathways
✅ Optional Diamond Tour afterwards to see how diamonds are cut & polished 💎

Whether you’re a wine lover, a chocolate enthusiast, or an explorer seeking inclusive luxury, this experience is one not to miss.

✨ Because every flavour — and every moment — should be accessible.

🇧🇷 Rio Beyond the Postcard: A Smarter Way to Enjoy Accessible Beaches

Rio de Janeiro’s beaches are legendary—but did you know they’re also becoming increasingly inclusive?

🏖️ Copacabana Beach, one of the world’s most iconic shorelines, is making real progress toward accessibility. If you’re visiting during the summer season (September to early May), here’s how to plan the ultimate barrier-free beach day:

✨ Start on the bike path—it’s smoother than the bumpy stone promenade along Avenida Atlântico.
🛟 Look out for the six lifeguard towers spaced along Copacabana. Each one has a wheelchair-accessible toilet, free to use for wheelchair users (normally 1 BRL / ~$0.25 USD).
🤝 On weekends, experience “Praia para Todos” (Beach for All)—a community initiative that brings accessibility to life with:
• An access mat to the water
• Floating beach wheelchairs
• A team of trained volunteers ready to help you dive in—literally.

🚍 And beyond the sand, Rio is making strides in accessible public transportation too, with more wheelchair-friendly buses and metro stations in service each year.

🌊 With the right planning, Copacabana isn’t just a pretty picture—it’s a destination where freedom meets the sea.

Discover the Forgotten Heritage of Montagu-Ashton
⛰️🚴🏽‍♀️

Nestled between the Breede River Valley and the Langeberg Mountains lies a scenic route rich in history and culture—Cogmans Kloof. But did you know this name is a living trace of the Cochoqua people, one of the most influential Khoekhoe groups in southern Africa?

Led by the remarkable chief Cochob, whose name means “narrow cheeks,” the Cochoqua once thrived in this region. After the Dutch arrival in 1652, they migrated from Saldanha Bay to the fertile lands of Montagu-Ashton, establishing a vibrant community here. The kloof itself, named after their leader, has transformed over time—from Cochonas to Cogmans—but the echoes of the Cochoqua remain. ⛰️

By the 1760s, pressure from colonial settlement forced the Cochoqua to leave, their journey taking them north to the Gariep (Orange) River. Today, little remains but scattered archaeological artefacts and the name of this passage through the mountains.

As we traverse this breathtaking landscape, let’s take a moment to honor the resilience of the Cochoqua people and reflect on their enduring legacy. Montagu-Ashton holds not just natural beauty but stories of survival and strength—stories that deserve to be told and remembered.

Let’s ensure the history of the Cochoqua is never forgotten. When you visit Montagu-Ashton, you’re not just exploring nature; you’re stepping into a chapter of South Africa’s rich indigenous heritage.

Enhancing Guest Experiences through Universal Access 🌏

Universal access is a game-changer in the hospitality industry, significantly enhancing guest experiences. By accommodating diverse needs and preferences, hotels and resorts ensure that every guest enjoys a seamless and enjoyable stay.

Did you know that accessible room features, like wider doorways, grab bars, and adjustable fixtures, can make a world of difference for guests with disabilities? These thoughtful touches provide them with the autonomy to navigate their space effortlessly. Plus, inclusive amenities like wheelchair-accessible pools and restaurants ensure that everyone can enjoy all the services offered.

We understand that accessibility isn't just for guests with disabilities—it benefits everyone! Families with young children, elderly guests, and even those recovering from injuries will find these features incredibly convenient. This holistic approach to accessibility can lead to increased guest satisfaction, loyalty, and positive reviews, which are crucial for a hotel's reputation and success.😊

In summary, by embracing universal access, hotels and resorts can provide an exceptional experience for all guests. This commitment to inclusivity not only meets diverse needs but also fosters loyalty and positive word-of-mouth, driving long-term success in the competitive hospitality industry.
