Did you know the African penguin was once commonly known as the Jackass Penguin?
The nickname comes from one of its most distinctive calls. During the breeding season, adults produce a loud, braying sound that is remarkably similar to the call of a donkeyâearning them the nickname âjackass penguin.â
If you visit Boulders or Stony Point and hear what sounds like a donkey in the distance, donât be surprised⌠itâs probably a penguin announcing its territory or calling to its mate!
As a tour guide, itâs one of my favourite facts to share because it always catches visitors by surprise. Nature has a wonderful sense of humour!
