Timbuktu Travel

Timbuktu Travel Timbuktu empowers curious travellers to explore far-flung corners of the world But really, the only people losing out are the travellers themselves.

Timbuktu was founded in 2014 with a clear mission: to make far-flung corners of the world more accessible by empowering you, our travellers, to explore and build trips, regardless of experience or budget - and save some pennies along the way. For years, trips to remote places have been notoriously exclusive and complicated to plan and book. We’re on a mission to change this. Using over 30 years of

combined travel experience, we’ve created a content-rich site that showcases our hand-picked crop of amazing journeys and empowers you to chop, change and refine them - or simply build one from scratch - all under the specialist guidance of our experts. It’s fun and easy, and saves you money. You explore and create; we guide and fulfill your dreams.

Most of you will recognise the Italy of movie scenes with its mirror-still lakes, cliff-hugging coastal curves and centuries of art. But this is Timbuktu and we’re like a trifolao in Piedmont when it comes to nosing out those lesser-known and wonderfully unique experiences.

It could be a hotel above Lake Como where breakfast is served wherever you plop down, the cellars of Chianti where the harvest still runs much as it did in the days of the Medici, or squeezing through the back canals of Venice, washing strung overhead and neighbours trading gossip from window to window.

That’s our Italy and we can’t wait to show you around.

We know June has just begun but is it ever too early to start making plans for an epic New Year’s Eve? We think not, especially if you’re looking for somewhere sunny and sensational to go.

📍Argentina is at the top of our list as summer brings long days and idyllic scenery, perfect for hiking in Patagonia and vineyard-hopping in Mendoza. There’s a properly festive atmosphere in Buenos Aires too and tango sessions go on deep into the night.

📍In South Africa, the beaches are as glorious as the winelands, while its safari hotspots are alive with newborns and birds. Why not combine it all with a road trip from Cape Town, along the Garden Route, and into the Eastern Cape – there’ll definitely be somewhere fabulous to ring in the new year.

📍Thailand is, in a word, sensational - whether you make a beeline for one of its pristine islands, or the marvellous culture and scenery of the north, with some megawatt sightseeing in Bangkok. And if you’re in the mood, there’s always a party happening somewhere.

Fancy seeing in 2027 with the trip of a lifetime? Get chatting with one of our specialists to make it happen.

As the largest and one of the most recognisable religious monuments in the world, the temples of Angkor Wat draw multitudes to Cambodia each year. But beyond this icon, Cambodia holds a wealth of lesser-known experiences, revealing the country’s enduring traditions and natural splendour.

📍Just a short boat ride from Phnom Penh, Silk Island is a rather magical place, offering a glimpse into a centuries-old craft. Frequent family-run workshops where artisans transform silk from cocoon to finished fabric – and even pick up beautifully-designed items to take home.

📍Far, far away from Cambodia’s famous temples, Koh Rong is pretty as a picture with its clear, turquoise waters and vibrant coral reefs – a true snorkeller’s paradise.

📍As you cruise along the Mekong River, stop to see Cambodia’s artisans in action, using aged-old techniques to create indigo dyes and hand-weave textiles.

📍Explore one of Southeast Asia’s largest remaining rainforests deep in the Cardamom Mountains. Guided hikes reveal gushing waterfalls, rare species and local communities who live amongst it all.

📍Pay a visit to one of Phnom Penh’s innovative glass distilleries, where you can sample spirits infused with Cambodian botanicals and get to know the country’s emerging culinary scene.

From Angkor Wat to its unspoiled islands, Cambodia is calling your name.

What's the one trip worth properly splurging on? Travel + Leisure put that exact question to seven luxury travel pros and, funnily enough, they all landed in the same place: Africa.

Our CEO and co-founder, Johnny Prince, made the case for Botswana's Okavango Delta – a place he reckons defines high-end safari travel. The Delta runs on a low-impact, high-value model where visitor numbers are kept deliberately low, the concessions are vast, and the camps are small and widely spaced. The upshot? You can spend hours out on a drive without clapping eyes on another vehicle. That kind of exclusivity doesn't come cheap, but few places on Earth deliver quite like this one.

One of our Japan and Asia experts, Jessica Klauzenberg, goes into what makes Japan so fantastic for all ages and travel styles.

And while the big names are fabulous to see, Jess loves being able to take her guests into Japan’s more remote regions too.

If there’s one thing Colombia won’t do, that’s be put in a box.

It’s larger than you think, more vibrant than you can imagine and captures the immense variety of South America so very well. Get to know the modern-day Medellín, which doesn’t forget its past but remembers it in the vivid street art and stories told by local guides; get to see the coffee-making process from start to finish in the Zona Cafetera – there’s nothing like sipping a cup overlooking the Andes either; and be blown away by the utter biodiversity, from the Amazon to the coastal reefs.

And as for the people? You’ll be hard-pressed to find a more welcoming bunch. Colombia certainly has our vote for South America’s best kept secret of 2026.

At the beginning of this year, our fearless CEO & Co-founder, Johnny, participated in the Cape2Rio Race – thrilling to say the least. His wife, Katie, then flew over to meet him in Rio de Janeiro and what followed was two and a half weeks of dazzling scenery, delicacies and falling entirely in love with Brazil.

In Rio itself, they stood beneath Christ the Redeemer and the waterfalls of Tijuca forest, explored historic Santa Teresa and watched the sunset from atop Sugarloaf Mountain. After meandering along the Costa Verde, Johnny and Katie were utterly charmed by the cobbled village of Paraty – and the spa at their boutique hotel.

Next up was the Amazon, where they spotted pink river dolphins and swam in the channels before breakfast, kayaked amongst technicolour flora and fauna, hung out with sloths on a night safari, and even saw the ‘Meeting of the Waters’ from the air. To end things off, Johnny and Katie enjoyed beach time and bar hopping in quaint Trancoso. And they went home already dreaming of their return.

Beyond its intoxicating energy and fascinating culture, Brazil is filled to the brim with wildlife wonders.

Jaguars rule the water-logged Pantanal, while magnificent birdlife and snoozing sloths occupy the Amazon and Costa Verde’s canopies, the waters around Fernando de Noronha are alive with dolphin pods and sea turtles, and Bahia’s coast plays host to thousands of humpback whales (at the right time of year).
