Even with a dark and stormy sky, these roads take your breath away. Cool air, so sun glare in your eyes, just rolling hills and epic views.

The Garden Route Tour takes us through SA's award winning winelands, the desert landscapes of the Karoo, fynbos covered mountain sides and each climate offers its own wildlife parks and experiences.

South Africa is not one climate... it's about five.

Western Cape gets rain in winter. Karoo stays cold but brilliantly dry. KZN is mild and green. Limpopo is warm and dusty. And the Highveld? Frosty mornings, perfect afternoons.

Knowing the difference changes everything about how you pack and plan.

Lone wolf or part of the pack?

Riding solo means total freedom; your pace, your stops, your silence. But having a friend alongside can make all the difference in experiencing the adventure and building memories.

Every rider has experienced both, and every adventure calls for a different challenge, sometimes it's a test of skills and willpower, other times, you need someone who can pull you out of the mud.

The apps we actually use before a SA ride:

Windy — wind speed and direction across mountain passes.
Ventusky — rain cell tracking.
Google Maps traffic layer — to spot unexpected road closures.
WhatsApp groups — honestly still the fastest way to hear about a pass being icy, rockfalls, and accidents or road closures.

Low-tech and high-tech working together. That's South African riding in a nutshell.

Any apps or tools you'd add to the list? 👇

Some routes are about the destination. This one is about the fire at the end of the day.

Limpopo and Mpumalanga in winter: dry, warm, wildlife-rich, and full of farm stalls, game lodges, and stops where somebody will inevitably start a braai before you've even taken your helmet off.

It's one of our favourite cold-season routes. And yes, the food is always good.

Have you ridden the north yet?

Cold starts do things to tyre pressure, battery charge, and brake fluid you won't feel until you're already moving.

A 10-minute pre-ride check in winter is worth more than it is in summer, especially if the bike has been sitting overnight in the cold.

Tyres, brakes, lights, chain, fluids. In that order. Every time.

What's the first thing you check before a winter ride?

Engine off. Helmet on the seat. The sun setting on the horizon.

Some push through golden hour, but sometimes, it is worth taking it slow. Five minutes of standing still at sunset can be the safest decision and the most scenic one. Avoiding drivers with glare in their eyes means that we get to embrace the landscape and finish the ride with the feeling of awe; the thing that draws you to these epic views in the first place.

Slow travelling doesn't mean boring, it means immersive, and this is one of those things that'll make the difference.
