Some routes are about the destination. This one is about the fire at the end of the day.

Limpopo and Mpumalanga in winter: dry, warm, wildlife-rich, and full of farm stalls, game lodges, and stops where somebody will inevitably start a braai before you've even taken your helmet off.

It's one of our favourite cold-season routes. And yes, the food is always good.

Have you ridden the north yet?

Cold starts do things to tyre pressure, battery charge, and brake fluid you won't feel until you're already moving.

A 10-minute pre-ride check in winter is worth more than it is in summer, especially if the bike has been sitting overnight in the cold.

Tyres, brakes, lights, chain, fluids. In that order. Every time.

What's the first thing you check before a winter ride?

Engine off. Helmet on the seat. The sun setting on the horizon.

Some push through golden hour, but sometimes, it is worth taking it slow. Five minutes of standing still at sunset can be the safest decision and the most scenic one. Avoiding drivers with glare in their eyes means that we get to embrace the landscape and finish the ride with the feeling of awe; the thing that draws you to these epic views in the first place.

Slow travelling doesn't mean boring, it means immersive, and this is one of those things that'll make the difference.

Three turnoffs worth making. No special rubber required.

📍 Phantom Pass: 17km of forest tar. Tight, technical, zero traffic. More fun per kilometre than the N2 manages in 100km.

📍 Prince Alfred's Pass: Long elevation gain on smooth tar. Proper corner sequences. Take your time at the top.

📍 Bloukrans Valley Road: Quiet, underridden, completely different character from the highway. Worth adding an hour to your day.

All three suit any touring bike. Save this for your next run through.

Loose shale over hardpack. No run-off. No signal. Elevation changes that'll load your front wheel in ways your suspension isn't expecting if you're not paying attention.
The Tankwa Pass is a technical ride dressed up as scenery. You're managing brake bias on steep descents, reading surface texture at speed, and making throttle decisions with real consequences.
If you're on road tyres: turn around.
If you haven't ridden gravel switchbacks before: come back when you have.
If you're ready, it's one of the finest passes in the Western Cape. And you'll have it almost entirely to yourself.

Three variables. Get them wrong and the Karoo becomes a very long, very unforgiving day.

Tyres: Dual-sport adventure rubber. You need structure for long tar sections and enough flex for the gravel you will encounter. Pure road tyres are not a compromise here, they're a liability.

Pressure: Drop 10–15% from road spec on gravel. More contact patch, better feedback, less deflection risk. Carry a gauge and a pump. The next garage may be 120km away.

Pace: 80–90km/h on open road. Stop every 90 minutes. Heat and distance compound fatigue faster than most riders expect. The Karoo doesn't care how experienced you are.
