Sometimes I wonder if all that Monique and I experienced at Seal Island in False Bay was real.

More than 3,500 days logged here, watching some of the most incredible marine natural history events ever witnessed. Day after incredible day, living National Geographic moments time and again, never thinking it would come to an end.
We got to know individual great whites, watched them grow from juveniles to fully grown adults, we fell in love with them and the whole cast of creatures that made up their incredible eco system.
Then it did come to an end.

The Natal Sharks board killing 11-60 great whites a year; poaching for their fins and jaws; poorly managed targeted fishing of the smaller shark species that the great whites prey on; mortality due to recreational sport fishing and the added pressures of orcas, all played their part.
Today I wonder if what we witnessed at Seal Island was all a dream?

It makes me more resolute than ever to tell this story so that others don’t make the same mistakes.
The closest relative of the great white, the magnificent mako, also has a special place in my heart for the countless times I have watched in awe as this cobalt warrior moves jet fighter like through its inky pelagic world and stirs in me a love for all that is fin, feather or fur.

There is much that we have lost, but there is equally much that is wondrous that still can be saved.
