Short Term Rental Success Guide

Short Term Rental Success Guide It's such an honor to be able to support you on your hospitality journey and share my expertise gained over years of service in this industry.

The South African Holiday Home Owner’s Guide is a practical, experience-based resource for holiday home owners and short-term rental managers who want to create beautiful, profitable guest stays without losing their peace of mind. I’m Elaine Skinner, and my journey in hospitality started over 25 years ago when my son was a year old and we were running a remote lodge in Matusadona National Park on

the shores of Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe. It was wild, unforgettable, and laid the foundation for everything I know about guest experience, resilience, and the magic of thoughtful hosting. After returning to South Africa, I co-founded a restaurant in Hermanus before transitioning into the property world, where I went on to start and run my own short-term rental and property management company in the Western Cape. I grew that business over 14 years before selling it, and have since consulted for homeowners, boutique hotels, and guesthouses across the country. This guide is the distillation of that experience: real tools, real systems, and real insights for people who want to host well, whether you're managing one listing or many. You’ll find:
✅ Setup checklists
✅ Guest-ready protocols
✅ Tax and SARS tips
✅ Templates and tools
✅ Lessons from the trenches (the good, the tough, and the fixable)

This is not about glamour. It’s about getting it right. Professional, profitable, and peaceful because it definetly can be done. If you're a holiday home owner, guesthouse manager, or simply dreaming of turning your space into something meaningful (and income-generating), you’re in the right place.

Airbnb is rolling out “temporary phone numbers” in the US. Guests call you from a fake line, it disappears two days after checkout, and all you see is “Airbnb Guest” on caller ID. Every call and message is tracked.

The feature itself isn’t the big issue. The bigger story is what it signals.

Airbnb’s original ethos was host-led. It was about people opening their homes, creating unique stays, and building community. That was the promise that made it so appealing for both hosts and guests.

But slowly, policy by policy, the model has shifted. Today Airbnb is becoming more guest-centric than host-centric. The focus is on protecting the guest, keeping them inside Airbnb’s ecosystem, and making sure Airbnb owns the relationship not.

As hosts, pay attention. Every time Airbnb moves the goalposts, it’s another reminder that this is their platform, not your business.

The question is: do you continue to build your livelihoods on a platform whose ethos has changed or do you start creating something sustainable that belongs to you?

Some posts from over the weekend regarding Airbnb.

Don’t let this happen to you!

And yes it’s true Airbnb no longer deal with charge backs. You as the host will get charged if guests do a charge back on their credit card after their stay.

How are you protecting yourself from this? Comment below
