4 May: Ruth First is born

Ruth Heloise First, journalist, academic, political activist and the wife of former South African Communist Party (SACP) leader Joe Slovo was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. Her political involvement started while she was still a student at the University of the Witwatersrand. She helped to establish the Federation of Progressive Students. Her fellow university students included Nelson Mandela, Joe Slovo and Eduardo Mondlane, the freedom fighter from Mozambique and the first leader of Liberation Front of Mozambique (FRELIMO).

"First’s intrepid and penetrating journalistic research exposed her to the brutality of labour exploitation and control on the mines and the farms. It reinforced her understanding of South Africa in Marxist terms..."

Vice President calls for unity and remembrance at Cassinga Day vigil

Staff Reporter

VICE President Lucia Witbooi has called on Namibians to preserve unity, uphold the values of the liberation struggle, and recommit to building an inclusive and prosperous nation, as she addressed the Cassinga Day commemoration and candlelight vigil held in Gibeon.

Speaking at the event, Witbooi paid tribute to the victims of the Cassinga Massacre, describing it as one of the darkest chapters in Namibia’s history. She added that the attack on 4 May 1978, in which men, women, and children were killed, remains a defining moment in the country’s liberation struggle and a symbol of the brutality of apartheid rule.

The Vice President said the tragedy drew international attention to Namibia’s struggle for independence and strengthened global support for the country’s liberation movement, ultimately contributing to independence in 1990.

Witbooi honoured the survivors, families of the fallen, and veterans of the liberation struggle, stating that their sacrifices laid the foundation for a sovereign and democratic Namibia.

She stressed the importance of preserving the memory of Cassinga as a guiding force for future generations, urging young people in particular to learn from history and take responsibility for nation-building.

The Vice President also highlighted the need to address ongoing socio-economic challenges, noting that true freedom must be accompanied by opportunity, inclusion, and shared prosperity for all Namibians.

She warned against division along ethnic, political, or social lines, emphasising that unity remains the country’s greatest strength and must be actively protected.

Witbooi called on all Namibians to uphold the principles of peace, justice, and solidarity, and to work collectively towards strengthening social cohesion and national development.

She concluded by urging the nation to honour the legacy of those who died at Cassinga by safeguarding the country’s unity and ensuring that the gains of independence benefit all citizens.
