The Cape Town EDITION opens at Quay 7 on the V&A Waterfront around 27 October. It has 142 rooms and suites, a rooftop pool, signature restaurants, and views of Table Mountain, the harbour and the Atlantic. It was designed by Neri & Hu with Cape Town's StudioMAS, and it's the first time EDITION, Marriott's ultra-luxury lifestyle brand, has come to Africa.

We've got a lovely stop for a Stellenbosch day.

Vonkel at Simonsig has opened next to the tasting room at Simonsig Family Vineyards, the estate that made South Africa's first Cap Classique, Kaapse Vonkel, back in 1971. This year marks 55 years of their bubbles.

Restaurateur and sommelier Marc Botes of The Tafel Group has brought new life to a space that had been quiet since the pandemic. The food is easy Mediterranean, made to go with Cap Classique: wood-fired Neapolitan pizza, house-made pasta, and brunch through to lunch. Only Simonsig w**es are on the list. Guests can pair a tasting or a sabrage with a long table in the Winelands light.

Balducci is back! 🍝

Balducci, the Italian restaurant that first opened at the V&A Waterfront in September 1996, closed during COVID. Thirty years after it first opened, it has come back as Caffé Balducci at Piazza St John on Sea Point's Main Road. It's an all-day café that opens at 8:30am and stays open until late. It has two outdoor terraces, wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas, a sushi and noodle bar, and a w**e bar with 60 w**es by the glass, poured from a nitrogen tap into Riedel glasses with sommeliers on hand. The Sea Point Promenade is a short walk away.

🍜 Surprise find:

Ramenhead has grown up. It has reopened at 75 Kloof Street as Ramenhead Izakaya. It's run by the FYN Group, the team behind FYN, which was named Eat Out Woolworths Restaurant of the Year in 2026.

What makes it special: it has the first Yamato noodle machine in Africa. The tonkotsu broth simmers for 18 hours, there's a new Osaka-style pressed sushi counter using fish from small-scale Western Cape fishers, and there's a courtyard sake bar pouring 23 sakes. Every table starts with a free welcome snack from the kitchen, and resident DJs play vinyl on Thursdays.

A much-loved name is back in our city!

🔥 Mzoli's, the legendary Gugulethu shisanyama, has reopened as Mzoli Meat, Grill & Gardens on Dunkley Square in Gardens. It's run by Sisanda Mangele, daughter of the late founder, Edwin "Mzoli" Ngcawuzele.

Record night for Cape w**e

A record weekend for Cape w**e! 🍷 The 42nd Cape Winemakers Guild Auction took place in Woodstock on 2 and 3 October and broke its sales record. Bidders came from 16 countries. For the first time in the Guild's 42 years, white w**es sold higher than reds, led by Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay. The top w**e of the night was the Mullineux "The Gris" Old Vine Sémillon 2025. Cape Point funicular is back

Good news from the tip of the Peninsula! 🌊 The Flying Dutchman Funicular at Cape Point has reopened after maintenance and a big upgrade. It's a quiet ride up to the viewing deck above Dias Beach and the old lighthouse. From there, it's 114 steps to the very top. On our private Peninsula journeys, we time Cape Point for the best light and the fewest crowds.
