ITS DONE! 🥇🍾🥂. After waiting more than 10 years, the new bridge crossing the Zambezi river at the border of Zambia and Botswana is finally open. This will make travel far easier and comfortable than the old boat crossing. I must admit even though brining groups across was a well planned procedure, it had its challenges and I will miss the nostalgia.

Ethiopian New Year “Enkutatash” – Ethiopia

As a Land of Origin Ethiopian calendar, unlike the Gregorian’s calendar is composed of 13 Months. While the 12 months have 30 days each, the 13th month named Pagume has regularly five (5) days but changes to six (6) days every leap year, this year it has six (6) days.
As such the Ethiopian New Year starts in September (Meskerem in the local language), not in January.

The Ethiopian New Year holiday is known as “Enkutatash” which means the ‘gift of jewels’ as stated in legends. “King Solomon of Jerusalem gave the Queen of Sheba jewellery during her Historic visit to Jerusalem some 3,000 years ago. Her return to Ethiopia after receiving the gift coincided with the New Year celebration in September, and hence the name Enkutatash came to be.”

One of the reasons behind which Ethiopia celebrates its New Year during this month is that the number of daylight hours and night time hours happens to be exactly equal “in every part” of the globe once every September and the Sun and the Moon, which are used to count time, each set after 12 hours. The second reason is derived from Religious believe, which says that the creation of the Heavens and the Earth took place in September.

During this holiday, a traditional song called “Abebayehosh” is performed by groups of Ethiopian girls who approach their neighbourhood families to extend best wishes for the New Year and in return they receive blessings from the elders.

Selemo sa Basotho (African New Year) – Lesotho

Lesotho is a democratic, sovereign and independent country with the unique characteristic of being totally surrounded by its neighbour, the Republic of South Africa bordering the Free State Province.

The 1st of August marks the African New Year (Selemo sa Basotho)

The celebration honours the giving way for new life after the dry season, known as winter according to the Gregorian calendar, which relies on the position of the moon, the natural indicator of the season rotation.

The Basotho calendar commences after the last days of the winter season in August, known for its wind, clearing Mother Earth and refreshing the land with showers of spring.

The Basotho people celebrate the beginning of the year with different rituals, for instance Mokete wa lewa, in which celebrations commence after harvesting, to thank God and the ancestors for the food harvested.
