Four days. Three wonderful guests from Germany. One unforgettable Garden Route adventure. 🇿🇦

I recently had the pleasure of hosting three ladies visiting South Africa from Germany on a private 4-day Garden Route tour. Before arriving, they simply shared their interests with me and I took care of all the planning, accommodation, activities, restaurant bookings, and logistics, allowing them to relax and enjoy their holiday from the moment they landed.

Although we're heading into winter, we were blessed with incredible weather and made the most of every day outdoors.

☀️ Day 1 started with a sunrise departure from Cape Town and breathtaking scenery on our journey east. We enjoyed a traditional roosterkoek breakfast near Swellendam before heading to Garden Route Game Lodge for a game drive. After spotting a variety of wildlife, we enjoyed a leisurely lunch and later checked into a beautiful beachfront guesthouse in Mossel Bay before ending the day with dinner at one of the town's favourite local restaurants.

🦁 Day 2 was all about relaxation and indulgence. We began with a morning game drive at Botlierskop Private Game Reserve, followed by lunch and an afternoon of spa treatments and relaxation beside the heated indoor pool. That evening I prepared a traditional South African braai, and we spent the night sharing stories around the fire.

🪂 Day 3 brought adventure. The ladies experienced the world's longest over-ocean zipline before we explored the natural beauty of Wilderness. Later, they took to the skies while paragliding in Sedgefield – an experience they will never forget! We continued on to Knysna, where the spectacular views and excellent food were the perfect way to end the day.

🌅 Day 4 was bittersweet as our Garden Route adventure came to an end. To lift the mood, we stopped for a gin pairing at a local distillery before visiting Cape Agulhas, the southernmost tip of Africa. We then followed the setting sun back towards Cape Town, reflecting on four incredible days together.

The greatest reward for me is hearing guests say that these memories will stay with them for a lifetime.

South Africa was officially crowned the friendliest country in the world in 2024 — and after travelling abroad a fair bit, I can confirm: we are basically the golden retrievers of humanity.

In many countries overseas, if you greet a stranger in the street, they look at you like you’re about to recruit them into a pyramid scheme.

In South Africa? If you say “Howzit?” to someone in the street, there’s a good chance you’ll leave with directions, weather updates, rugby predictions, and an invitation to a braai.

Cape Town especially has its own beautiful kind of chaos.

Where else in the world do you park your car and immediately meet an unofficial “car guard” named Blessing, who watches your vehicle like it’s a Bentley parked outside Buckingham Palace… for the price of two coins and a cold Coke?

Where else do tourists stop at a scenic viewpoint to admire the ocean, only to discover a baboon has unzipped the rental car, stolen a packet of Simba chips, and is now judging everyone from the roof like the rightful owner of the vehicle?

And don’t even get me started on our neighbourhood culture. In Cape Town, your neighbour comes over to borrow a screwdriver and somehow three hours later there’s a fire going, someone’s uncle is telling stories from 1987, music is playing, and you’re being asked, “How do you like your steak?”

No calendar invite. No RSVP. Just vibes.

As someone who runs private tours around Cape Town, one comment I hear from visitors again and again is:
“The people made this trip unforgettable.”

Sure, we’ve got Table Mountain, breathtaking coastlines, penguins, wine farms, and sunsets that look photoshopped… but the real magic is the people you meet along the way.

The petrol attendant who cleans your windscreen without being asked.
The local aunty who calls you “my boy” after meeting you once.
The stranger who gives you a full weather forecast while you’re standing in a supermarket queue.

Cape Town is a lekker place. It gets under your skin a little bit. That’s why so many tourists struggle to say goodbye at the airport… and honestly, I don’t blame them.

Come visit South Africa.
Worst case scenario: a baboon steals your snacks.
Best case scenario: you leave with a second family.

And as always- stay vigilant, use reputable transport, and apply common sense when it comes to safety as you would when travelling to any country.

This is the kind of day you don't find in a brochure.

Last week I spent a few days with Carol Douglas and Simon, a lovely couple visiting from Canada, exploring Cape Town at a relaxed, more personal pace.

The Winelands greeted us with steady rain yesterday and winter chill — not what most people hope for, but it turned out to be the highlight. We found ourselves tucked into cozy tasting rooms, beside warm fireplaces, listening to winemaking stories while enjoying some exceptional red wines.

By the time we reached Franschhoek for lunch, the rain eased just enough. The valley slowly revealed itself — misty mountains, endless vineyards, and that quiet kind of beauty you don’t rush through.

It wasn’t the kind of day you plan. But it’s the kind you remember.

There’s something truly special about leaving Cape Town behind for a few days and heading out along the breathtaking Garden Route… 🌿

I’ve just returned from a private tour with guests who wanted to experience a little bit of everything — and the journey reminded me (again) why I love what I do.

Day 1 took us to Botlierskop Private Game Reserve, where we headed out on a game drive surrounded by wide open landscapes and incredible wildlife. There’s nothing quite like seeing animals in their natural environment, especially when it’s someone’s first time — those reactions never get old.

From there, we chased a different kind of thrill in Mossel Bay — soaring above the ocean on the longest over-ocean zipline in the world. Ocean views, fresh air, and just the right amount of adrenaline!

Day 2 slowed things down in the best possible way. We walked the peaceful Half Collared Kingfisher Trail, following the sounds of the forest to a hidden waterfall… one of those places that makes you pause and just take it all in.

Later, standing above the famous Map of Africa viewpoint, we watched the landscape unfold into one of the most unique natural formations in the country.

Day 3 brought us to the underground wonders of the Cango Caves — ancient, dramatic, and full of stories. We wrapped up in Oudtshoorn with a visit to a local ostrich farm, where curiosity (and a few laughs) made for the perfect ending.

Every tour is different, but what stays the same is that moment when it all just clicks — when landscapes, experiences, and good company come together to create something unforgettable.

The Garden Route really does have a way of surprising you… no matter how many times you’ve travelled it.

Some days on tour remind me why I absolutely love what I do.

A few days ago I took guests to Inverdoorn Private Game Reserve, about three hours from Cape Town. The drive itself is already a highlight — heading up the Du Toitskloof Pass, through the Huguenot Tunnel, and emerging into the dramatic landscapes on the other side of the Du Toitskloof Mountains.

The reserve didn’t disappoint. My guests experienced an incredible Big 5 game drive, and later that evening they enjoyed stargazing under those vast Karoo skies — something city lights simply can’t compete with.

On the way back to Cape Town, I decided not to rush the journey. Instead of taking the highway again, we took the scenic route via Bain's Kloof Pass towards Wellington — a road I hadn’t driven in years.

I had honestly forgotten just how spectacular this pass is.

The road winds gently through rugged mountain scenery, with dramatic rock formations, deep valleys and incredible viewpoints around almost every corner. It’s also beautifully maintained, which allows you to slow down, enjoy the drive, and really take in the surroundings.

My guests absolutely loved it — and it reminded me of something I often tell visitors: sometimes the road itself becomes one of the highlights of the journey.

If you’re ever travelling out towards the Karoo or the Ceres region, consider allowing a little extra time and exploring Bain's Kloof Pass instead of rushing straight back.

Sometimes the best travel memories happen on the road less travelled.

Some places in Cape Town just feel like the start of an adventure — and the V&A Waterfront is one of them.

We recently set sail from the harbour, with the majestic Table Mountain and the Twelve Apostles rising on one side, and the vast, sparkling Atlantic stretching endlessly on the other. There’s something magical about seeing the city from the water — the colours, the light, the fresh ocean air.

And then… the real show began. Dolphins riding the waves beside us, playful seals popping up to say hello, and even penguins making an appearance along the scenic coastline.

Back on land, the harbour hums with life — stories in every direction, from its early days in the 1600s to the old Time Ball Tower and working dry dock still standing watch today. But more than the history, it’s the feeling that stays with you.

Cape Town has a way of surprising you — especially when you see it from the sea. 🌊

Ever had your lunch stolen by a local resident whilst on holiday in Cape Town? 😀

On a recent Cape Peninsula private tour with my guests, we stopped in Simon’s Town for a relaxed lunch. Out of nowhere, a cheeky resident Chacma baboon casually walked into the restaurant like he owned the place. Before anyone could react, he made a beeline straight for my plate… grabbed my thick-cut, golden chips (completely ignoring the fresh lemon slice, of course!), and then helped himself to a slice of bread on the way out.

Within seconds he was up on the roof, happily enjoying his unexpected meal while my guests — and the rest of the restaurant — watched in total amazement and laughter. One of those truly unforgettable Cape Town moments you simply can’t plan for!

Encounters like these are part of what makes exploring the Cape Peninsula so special. The scenery, the wildlife, the stories, and the little surprises along the way always leave visitors with something to talk about long after the trip ends.

There’s something very special about experiencing Table Mountain on foot. 🌿
‎It’s not only about the views, but the small moments along the way – the fynbos, the fresh air, the ever-changing light, and the quiet sense of space that makes Cape Town’s natural landscape so memorable.

‎Two trails that visitors often really enjoy:
‎
‎🌄 Platteklip Gorge
‎One of the most direct routes to the top of Table Mountain. As you climb, the views over the city and coastline open up beautifully behind you. It’s a well-marked and popular trail, best tackled early in the morning when temperatures are cooler and the mountain is quieter.
‎
‎🌿 Camps Bay Pipe Track
‎A gentler, lesser-known option that’s ideal for families and those wanting a more relaxed walk. This trail runs along the western slopes of the mountain and offers stunning views of Camps Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, without the steep climb. It’s perfect for soaking in the scenery at an easy pace.

‎A few important safety tips when hiking Table Mountain:
• Always check the weather forecast on the day – conditions can change quickly
‎• Start early and plan your route before you go
‎• Take enough water, snacks, sun protection, and a warm layer
‎• Stick to marked paths and avoid hiking alone if possible
‎• Let someone know your plans before heading out
‎
‎Table Mountain is incredibly beautiful, but it deserves respect. With good preparation, a hike here can easily become one of the highlights of a visit to Cape Town.
