If youā€™re planning your Cape Town holiday right now, this is one coastal tradition you definitely want on your radar!

Turn your sound up for this quick video we caught of the Whale Crier blowing his horn near the Old Harbour. That deep, echoing sound is actually made from a real piece of dried kelp (seaweed)! šŸŒŠ

šŸ“œ The Story Behind the Kelp Horn

Back in 1991, a traveler told the local tourism office that the incredible whale sightings in Walker Bay were the Cape's "best-kept secret."
To change that, a local named Jim Wepener came up with a brilliant idea inspired by old-school town criers. In August 1992, Pieter Claasen who was an employee at the Hermanus Old Harbour, was appointed as the worldā€™s very first official Whale Crier, patrolling the cliffs to make sure no one missed a sighting.

Itā€™s easily one of the most charming traditions in South Africa. Spotting these gentle giants from the shore is magical enough, but hearing that horn echo across the bay just takes the experience to the next level.

The seal that looks cuteā€¦ but has a few tricks up its sleeve šŸ¦­šŸŸ

If youā€™ve ever visited Kalk Bay Harbour, youā€™ve probably seen the local Cape fur seals keeping a very close eye on the fishermen.

And letā€™s be honest ā€” they are incredibly entertaining.

They know exactly where the fish scraps and discarded bait are going, and theyā€™re clever enough to realise that hanging around humans can sometimes mean an easy meal. Some have become surprisingly good at begging ā€” and tourists understandably find the whole spectacle fascinating.

But hereā€™s the important part: please donā€™t feed them.

šŸ¦­ They can become aggressive.
When seals learn that people = food, they can start demanding it. A large seal may look friendly, but they are powerful wild animals, and bites or injuries can happen surprisingly quickly.

šŸŸ They need to learn how to hunt.
Especially for young seals, relying on handouts can interfere with learning the skills they need to find and catch their own food in the ocean.

šŸ½ļø A handful of scraps isnā€™t the same as a natural diet.
Fish scraps and processed bait may not provide the variety and nutritional balance a seal gets from hunting naturally.

šŸŽ£ And thereā€™s another hidden danger.
Seals hanging around boats and fishing areas are more likely to encounter hooks, fishing line, nets and plastic debris ā€” all of which can cause horrific injuries or even death.

So by all means, watch them, photograph them and enjoy their cheeky personalities ā€” just give them some space and let them remain wild.

Sometimes the best wildlife experience is the one where we admire an animal without turning it into a pet. šŸŒŠšŸ¦­

We had a fantastic day out, hiking Table Mountain. It is a great experience, but it requires preparation because the mountainā€™s weather, terrain, and security risks can change quickly.
Some advice- if youā€™re not familiar with the trails, use a guide; avoid hiking alone whenever possible; stay on marked, popular trails; carry the essentials and tell someone your plans.

Just returned from a wonderful day in Hermanus with visitors exploring one of the Western Cape's most scenic coastal regions.

For anyone considering a day trip from Cape Town, the journey itself is part of the experience. We travelled over Sir Lowry's Pass, enjoying spectacular mountain and ocean views before arriving in Hermanus.

One of the highlights was walking along the famous cliff paths. The fresh sea air, beautiful coastal scenery, and uninterrupted ocean views make this worthwhile even when whales aren't around. We were fortunate enough to meet one of the local whale spotters, who directed us to some early whale activity offshore. Despite it still being quite early in the season, we were treated to incredible views of whales breaching from the shoreline ā€“ a truly memorable sight.

Afterwards, we enjoyed lunch at the Hermanus Waterfront overlooking the bay before continuing to Stony Point, where the African penguin colony never disappoints. The drive back to Cape Town along Clarence Drive provided the perfect ending to an already fantastic day, with some of the most breathtaking coastal scenery you'll find anywhere in South Africa.

A small tip for anyone planning a whale-watching visit: while sightings are certainly possible in June, the season really starts picking up from July, with August and September generally offering the best opportunities to see southern right whales close to shore.

Four days. Three wonderful guests from Germany. One unforgettable Garden Route adventure. šŸ‡æšŸ‡¦

I recently had the pleasure of hosting three ladies visiting South Africa from Germany on a private 4-day Garden Route tour. Before arriving, they simply shared their interests with me and I took care of all the planning, accommodation, activities, restaurant bookings, and logistics, allowing them to relax and enjoy their holiday from the moment they landed.

Although we're heading into winter, we were blessed with incredible weather and made the most of every day outdoors.

ā˜€ļø Day 1 started with a sunrise departure from Cape Town and breathtaking scenery on our journey east. We enjoyed a traditional roosterkoek breakfast near Swellendam before heading to Garden Route Game Lodge for a game drive. After spotting a variety of wildlife, we enjoyed a leisurely lunch and later checked into a beautiful beachfront guesthouse in Mossel Bay before ending the day with dinner at one of the town's favourite local restaurants.

šŸ¦ Day 2 was all about relaxation and indulgence. We began with a morning game drive at Botlierskop Private Game Reserve, followed by lunch and an afternoon of spa treatments and relaxation beside the heated indoor pool. That evening I prepared a traditional South African braai, and we spent the night sharing stories around the fire.

šŸŖ‚ Day 3 brought adventure. The ladies experienced the world's longest over-ocean zipline before we explored the natural beauty of Wilderness. Later, they took to the skies while paragliding in Sedgefield ā€“ an experience they will never forget! We continued on to Knysna, where the spectacular views and excellent food were the perfect way to end the day.

šŸŒ… Day 4 was bittersweet as our Garden Route adventure came to an end. To lift the mood, we stopped for a gin pairing at a local distillery before visiting Cape Agulhas, the southernmost tip of Africa. We then followed the setting sun back towards Cape Town, reflecting on four incredible days together.

The greatest reward for me is hearing guests say that these memories will stay with them for a lifetime.

South Africa was officially crowned the friendliest country in the world in 2024 ā€” and after travelling abroad a fair bit, I can confirm: we are basically the golden retrievers of humanity.

In many countries overseas, if you greet a stranger in the street, they look at you like youā€™re about to recruit them into a pyramid scheme.

In South Africa? If you say ā€œHowzit?ā€ to someone in the street, thereā€™s a good chance youā€™ll leave with directions, weather updates, rugby predictions, and an invitation to a braai.

Cape Town especially has its own beautiful kind of chaos.

Where else in the world do you park your car and immediately meet an unofficial ā€œcar guardā€ named Blessing, who watches your vehicle like itā€™s a Bentley parked outside Buckingham Palaceā€¦ for the price of two coins and a cold Coke?

Where else do tourists stop at a scenic viewpoint to admire the ocean, only to discover a baboon has unzipped the rental car, stolen a packet of Simba chips, and is now judging everyone from the roof like the rightful owner of the vehicle?

And donā€™t even get me started on our neighbourhood culture. In Cape Town, your neighbour comes over to borrow a screwdriver and somehow three hours later thereā€™s a fire going, someoneā€™s uncle is telling stories from 1987, music is playing, and youā€™re being asked, ā€œHow do you like your steak?ā€

No calendar invite. No RSVP. Just vibes.

As someone who runs private tours around Cape Town, one comment I hear from visitors again and again is:
ā€œThe people made this trip unforgettable.ā€

Sure, weā€™ve got Table Mountain, breathtaking coastlines, penguins, w**e farms, and sunsets that look photoshoppedā€¦ but the real magic is the people you meet along the way.

The petrol attendant who cleans your windscreen without being asked.
The local aunty who calls you ā€œmy boyā€ after meeting you once.
The stranger who gives you a full weather forecast while youā€™re standing in a supermarket queue.

Cape Town is a lekker place. It gets under your skin a little bit. Thatā€™s why so many tourists struggle to say goodbye at the airportā€¦ and honestly, I donā€™t blame them.

Come visit South Africa.
Worst case scenario: a baboon steals your snacks.
Best case scenario: you leave with a second family.

And as always- stay vigilant, use reputable transport, and apply common sense when it comes to safety as you would when travelling to any country.
