Our first day of trekking to see Mountain ( Eastern) Gorilla took a fair bit of effort from all involved. The family our group had been elected to visit, was remote and took approximately two and a half hours of heavy climbing to reach. The family was was very tolerant of our presence and the rangers did a great job of keeping things together. There where some exciting moments though, like when a young male walked-up to a few of us and tried to knock my camera out of my hands. I was amazed and to be honest never felt threatened. Avoiding eye contact and holding a submissive pose is the go to plan If one can’t retreat quickly enough from an approaching gorilla. They are incredibly tolerant of people and if one follows the directions of the rangers who know them so well, there is little chance of an accident unfolding.

Green-breasted Pitta is one of two pittas occurring in Africa, the other being the African Pitta. Both species are considered difficult to see. The Green-breasted ranks as one of Africa’s top jungle birds to see, due to its striking colours and reclusive nature. We had some incredible moments with this individual which this image doesn’t fully do justice too.

Very happy to have seen this Ross’s Turaco in northern Namibia at yesterday. Such a great looking bird, which the pics don’t do justice too. This species’s normal range lies to the north in the miombo woodlands of Angola & Zambia where we have also seen it before. Nonetheless it remains one of few individuals recorded in Southern Africa and has visited the river frontage around Taranga Lodge over the last few winters.

Sociable Weaver flocks in the southern Namib. Some of best rains in decades have turned many parts of the Namib Desert into endless grasslands. Life is thriving at the moment in this “boom and bust” environment.
