A Micro Blue Moon is Coming 🌕

May's second Full Moon rises on May 30-31. It won't look blue. It won't look big. It's the smallest Full Moon of the entire year. And it has a bonus.

The Blue Moon on May 31 peaks at 08:45 UTC, shining from the constellation Scorpius at a distance of 406,135 km, the farthest Full Moon of 2026. That makes it both a Blue Moon (the second Full Moon in a calendar month) and a Micromoon (Full Moon near apogee). It appears roughly 5.5% smaller and 10.5% dimmer than average, though as with every micromoon, the difference is invisible without a side-by-side photograph. It will look full, bright, and exactly the way you expect.

🦂 For observers across parts of Asia, the Middle East, and eastern Africa, there's an added spectacle: the Moon passes directly in front of Antares, the red supergiant heart of Scorpius, in a lunar occultation. The star vanishes behind the Moon's edge and reappears roughly an hour later.

The next monthly Blue Moon doesn't arrive until December 31, 2028. Two Full Moons in one month only happens about once every two and a half years 🌕🔵

This is a fascinating find - thank you Plettenberg Bay Angling Association - Wrecks in Plettenberg Bay. It was known as the Cape of Storms for a reason. This past week, the ocean revealed (not for the first time) what is believed to be the remains of the Agnes.
