July in Africa: winter warmth and perfect safari conditions

While the UK welcomes summer rain, Southern Africa's winter offers something magical – crisp mornings, clear blue skies, and wildlife gathering around water sources.

Most of Southern Africa is characterised by sub-tropical rainy summers and dry sunny winters. Thus the ideal time for walking safaris is between May and September.

In Zimbabwe, July means excellent game viewing as animals concentrate around rivers and waterholes. The vegetation is sparse, making wildlife easier to spot, and the comfortable temperatures make walking safaris absolutely perfect.

Why July is brilliant for whale watching in Hermanus! 🐋

The southern right whales are arriving right on schedule! July marks the start of peak whale season, and there's nowhere better to witness these gentle giants than from the clifftops of this charming seaside town.
You'll spot mothers with calves, spectacular breaches, and the famous "spy-hopping" behaviour where whales poke their heads above water for a curious look around.
