What started as a Professional Hunter and client relationship grew into something far bigger and better over the years — a genuine friendship built through shared experiences, time in the African bush, and a passion for hunting.

Mr Matt has now had the opportunity to experience Africa twice alongside Sakkie, and with every trip, the friendship grew stronger.

What began with a rifle, a hunting adventure and a client booking has evolved into a partnership we are incredibly proud of.

Today, we are excited to officially welcome Matt Gordon as Mount Kudu Safaris’ new Booking Agent for Pennsylvania! 🇺🇸🤝🇿🇦

Mr Matt knows the Mount Kudu experience firsthand — not just from behind a desk, but from being in the field, sharing the campfire, hunting the African bush and experiencing the adventure himself.

🦌 THE LITTLE GHOST OF THE AFRICAN BUSH | COMMON DUIKER

Small in stature. Big in character. And far more challenging to find than its name suggests. 🇿🇦

Meet the Common Duiker (Sylvicapra grimmia) — also known as the Grey Duiker, and a proud member of Africa’s exclusive Tiny Ten.

Found across much of sub-Saharan Africa, including extensively throughout South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique, the Common Duiker thrives wherever there is enough natural cover — from savanna woodland and bushveld to grassland edges and even mountainous habitats.

But don't let the word common fool you…

The Common Duiker is a master of stealth, camouflage and disappearing into thick cover. Their name comes from the Afrikaans word duik — meaning “to dive” — a fitting description for the way they can suddenly vanish into the bush when alarmed.

🔎 DID YOU KNOW?

• 🏔️ They're remarkable mountaineers: Common Duikers have been recorded at elevations of up to around 4,900 metres, making them exceptionally altitude-tolerant among African ungulates.

• 🐾 The females can be larger than the males: Unlike many antelope species, female Common Duikers are generally heavier than males.

• 🎨 They aren't always grey: Their coat colour can vary considerably with geography — from sandy and pale brown to grey-brown and much darker shades in some mountain populations.

• 🌿 Cover is everything: They are strongly associated with woody vegetation, tall grass and bushy habitat, using it for food, shelter, shade and protection.

• 🧭 They're highly adaptable: Common Duikers can persist surprisingly well in landscapes altered by agriculture and even around human settlements, provided sufficient natural cover remains.

• 🦌 One tiny trophy, one big achievement: Being part of the Tiny Ten makes the Common Duiker a sought-after addition to a dedicated African small-antelope collection.

🦌 SMALL ANTELOPE. BIG TROPHY. 🔥

Some trophies impress with sheer size.

Others earn their place in the trophy room because of the skill, awareness and fieldcraft it takes to get close enough for the opportunity.

Meet this outstanding Steenbok — one of Africa’s most beautiful little antelope and a proud member of the exclusive and elusive Tiny Ten. 🌿🏆

Standing only around 45–60 cm at the shoulder and weighing roughly 7–15 kg, the Steenbok may be small in stature, but finding a mature ram in the right position can be a serious challenge.

🌍 WHERE ARE STEENBOK FOUND?

Steenbok have an impressive distribution across southern Africa. They occur throughout much of South Africa, as well as Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Zambia and parts of Angola. They favour open savanna, grassland, scrub and semi-arid habitats where there is enough cover to disappear into.

👀 DID YOU KNOW?

🔸 Only the ram carries horns — the ewe is hornless.

🔸 Steenbok are generally solitary and territorial, with males and females maintaining stable home ranges rather than travelling in herds.

🔸 They have an unusual “toilet etiquette” — they scrape a shallow hole with their front hooves before defecating or urinating and then cover it afterwards. Talk about keeping things tidy!

🔸 They can survive with very little access to drinking water, obtaining much of the moisture they need from their food. They also dig for roots and bulbs with their sharp front hooves.

🔸 A Steenbok ewe hides her young in dense cover, returning mainly during the cooler parts of the day to feed and groom it — an incredible survival strategy for such a small antelope.

And perhaps the most fascinating thing about the Steenbok?

It doesn't need to be big to be a serious trophy.

For hunters pursuing the Tiny Ten, the Steenbok represents exactly what makes these small antelope so special — a challenging encounter, a beautiful African species and a trophy earned through careful hunting. 🇿🇦🌿

The Blue Wildebeest is one of Africa’s most fascinating antelope — and hunting a mature bull can be an exciting challenge from start to finish.

🔥 DID YOU KNOW?

📌 He’s not a buffalo! Despite his buffalo-like appearance, the Blue Wildebeest is actually an antelope.

📌 The bulls become territorial around 4–5 years of age, defending prime areas and competing for access to females.

📌 Those horns are built for battle. When bulls challenge one another, they can drop onto their knees and engage in powerful horn-sparring contests.

📌 A mature bull can weigh around 250 kg, with males generally darker and more heavily built than females.

📌 They are incredibly fast. Blue wildebeest can reach speeds of around 80 km/h, an impressive combination of power and endurance.

📌 Their unusual body shape has a purpose. High shoulders and long front legs give them an efficient cantering gait that helps them travel considerable distances across the plains.

📌 And here's one most people don't know: territorial bulls don't simply rely on their horns to advertise ownership. They use dung, scent-gland secretions, ground pawing, horning and even loud bellowing to mark and defend their territory.

🌿🩵 THE GHOST OF THE FOREST — BLUE DUIKER 🩵🌿

There are animals you spot from a kilometre away…

And then there are animals that can stand just metres from you and make you question whether you actually saw anything at all. 👀

The Blue Duiker is one of those animals.

Quiet. Secretive. Incredibly alert.

And perfectly built for life in the shadows of Africa’s dense forests and thickets. 🌿🦌

Part of the exclusive and elusive TINY TEN, the Blue Duiker offers a completely different kind of hunting experience — one where knowing the habitat, reading the bush and spotting the smallest movement can make all the difference.

🌍 A SOUTHERN AFRICAN FOREST SPECIALIST

Blue Duikers occur across parts of southern and eastern Africa, including areas of South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

In South Africa, they are associated with the eastern and southern coastal regions, particularly areas of dense forest, coastal thicket and lush vegetation.

This is not an animal you'll usually find standing out in the open.

Their world is the thick stuff. 🌳🌿

And that's exactly what makes encountering one so memorable.

🔎 A FEW BLUE DUIKER FACTS YOU MAY NOT KNOW

🩵 Their blue-grey coat gives them their name and provides excellent camouflage in the shadows of dense vegetation.

🦌 Both males AND females can carry horns, which are short and sharp and often partly concealed by the hair on the forehead.

👀 Blue Duikers have a fascinating relationship with their environment. They are highly alert and rely heavily on dense cover when threatened.

💨 Their name, “duiker,” comes from the Afrikaans/Dutch word associated with diving, describing the way these little antelope disappear into thick vegetation when alarmed.

🍃 They aren't simply browsers. Their diet can include fallen fruit, leaves, flowers and other forest vegetation, and they may also consume animal matter such as insects and eggs.

🦌 At only around 30–41 cm at the shoulder, this is one of Africa's smallest antelope — but its tiny size doesn't make the encounter any less exciting.

🏆 ONE OF THE TINY TEN

The Tiny Ten are a fascinating collection of Africa's smallest antelope, and the Blue Duiker is one of the species that makes this group so special.

For collectors, these aren't trophies that simply happen while you're out hunting.

They represent the rare encounters, difficult terrain and incredible diversity of African wildlife.

Some of the most challenging trophies in Africa are the ones you can almost miss completely…

Meet the Red Duiker — one of the elusive and highly sought-after members of Africa’s legendary TINY TEN! 🦌🔥

The Tiny Ten is a collection of Africa’s smallest antelope, and for many hunters, pursuing these species becomes a safari challenge of its own.

The Red Duiker is one of the species traditionally included in the Tiny Ten.

And this little antelope certainly earns its place!

🌿 WHERE WILL YOU FIND THEM?

The Red Forest Duiker, also known as the Natal Red Duiker, occurs from southeastern Tanzania through Mozambique and Eswatini into northeastern KwaZulu-Natal, with isolated populations along the Mpumalanga escarpment.

They favour dense forests, thickets, riverine vegetation and heavily wooded areas — exactly the kind of habitat where they can disappear in the blink of an eye.

📌 DID YOU KNOW?

🦌 They are surprisingly small — around 43 cm at the shoulder and averaging roughly 14 kg.

🦌 Both males and females can have horns, with the short horns averaging around 6 cm.

🦌 Their name means “diver.” The word duiker comes from Afrikaans/Dutch and refers to their incredible habit of diving into thick vegetation when alarmed.

🦌 They can jump! These little antelope have been recorded clearing obstacles of around 1.3 metres.

🦌 They are masters of disappearing. Their reddish coat blends beautifully into the thick vegetation, making them incredibly difficult to spot.

🦌 And that's what makes the hunt so special. Tiny Ten species are renowned among specialist hunters for being challenging because of their size, alertness and difficult habitats.

And here's something you might NOT know about hippos…

🦛 They don't actually swim! Their bodies are so dense that instead of swimming like most aquatic animals, they walk, push and even run along the bottom of rivers and waterholes.

🦛 They can sleep underwater. A special reflex allows a sleeping hippo to automatically rise to the surface, breathe, and then sink back down — without fully waking up.

🦛 Their famous "blood sweat" isn't blood. Hippos produce a reddish-orange skin secretion containing pigments that help protect them from UV radiation, while the red pigment also has antibacterial properties.

🦛 They're ecosystem engineers. Their nutrient-rich dung contributes nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus to waterways, influencing the aquatic ecosystem around them.

🦛 They're much faster than they look! Despite their enormous size and short legs, hippos can reach impressive speeds over short distances on land.

Nature doesn't always announce when something incredible is about to happen.

🐾 When Your Kruger Camp Gets a Little Too Busy! 🌿📸

Some safari moments are planned… and then there are the moments that simply arrive at your doorstep! 😍

While staying at our Kruger accommodation with clients, we were treated to an unforgettable visit from a whole troop of banded mongooses — and what a spectacle they were!

With their beautifully marked, banded backs, long tails and curious little faces, these energetic characters turned an ordinary afternoon at camp into a true African wildlife experience. 🐾🇿🇦

And here’s something that makes them even more special:

🔸 Banded mongooses (Mungos mungo) are highly social animals, usually travelling and foraging together in groups. In Kruger, groups of around 20 are commonly reported, although much larger gatherings can occur.

🔸 They are diurnal, meaning they are most active during the day — exactly when safari guests are out enjoying the bush. ☀️

🔸 Their menu is surprisingly varied! They feed mainly on insects, but will also take rodents, reptiles, eggs, fruit and berries. Their constant sniffing, digging and scratching helps them uncover hidden food.

🔸 They are incredibly communicative. When separated or disturbed, members of the group can use high-pitched calls to keep in contact with one another. When danger is suspected, the entire troop can suddenly become alert. 🐾👀

🔸 And their relationship with the Kruger landscape goes beyond simply passing through — banded mongooses are one of the regularly encountered mongoose species in the park, making sightings around camps and roads a wonderful bonus for wildlife lovers.

Watching our clients capture these little characters on camera was a reminder of something we love about Africa:

One minute you're enjoying the tranquillity of the bush… and the next, you've got an entire mongoose neighbourhood running past your feet! 😂🐾

🖤❤️ NOT EVERY SAFARI GIVES YOU THIS SIGHTING… ❤️🖤

There are some moments in the African bush that make you stop, reach for the camera and simply appreciate what is standing in front of you.

This is one of them. 🇿🇦

Meet the Southern Ground Hornbill (Bucorvus leadbeateri) — one of Africa’s most fascinating birds and the largest hornbill species in the world.

And while many visitors come to Africa hoping to see the Big Five, sightings like this remind us that Africa’s magic is found far beyond the famous animals.

🌿 Did you know?

🖤 Southern Ground Hornbills can stand around 90–110 cm tall and weigh approximately 3.5–4 kg.

👣 They spend roughly 70% of their day on the ground, walking through savannah and woodland while searching for food.

🐍 Their diet can include insects, reptiles, amphibians, rodents, snails and even snakes.

🔴 The brilliant red skin on the face and throat is especially striking in adult males. That red throat pouch can inflate when the bird produces its remarkable deep booming call — a sound that can carry a long distance and is sometimes mistaken for the roar of a lion.

👨‍👩‍👦 And here's something truly incredible: they are cooperative breeders. Groups can consist of 2–11 birds, with other members of the group helping the breeding pair defend their territory and raise the chick.

🌳 They also depend heavily on suitable large trees and cavities for nesting, which makes habitat loss a serious threat.

Sadly, Southern Ground Hornbills have declined significantly in South Africa and are classified as Endangered nationally. Their slow reproduction makes every sighting even more meaningful.

So while a trophy may be measured in inches, some of the most unforgettable safari trophies are the moments you simply cannot buy or guarantee.

A Southern Ground Hornbill quietly walking through the African bush is one of those moments. ❤️🌍
