About 90 minutes drive north of Cape Town, the N1 highway passes through the fertile Hex River Valley, known as the gateway to the Cape. Those traveling through the valley always remarks at how picturesque and serene it seems. Farms are nestled between the Hex and Kwadouw mountains, which are snowcapped during winter months. In autumn, the vineyard leaves change from a uniform green to yellows, burgundy, russet and mocha, transforming the valley floor into a patchwork of rich earthy tones. The Hex River Valley is the biggest producer of table grapes in South Africa and hosts Hexkoel, the largest Pre-cooler in the Southern Hemisphere. This traditional home of the S.A. Table Grape Industry has been producing and exporting grapes for a century. Approximately 22 million cartons of grapes are exported annually. The harvesting season runs from mid December until April. During the mont of May, photographers rush to De Doorns in the hope of capturing the autumn splendour on camera.
The wine cellar with the longest harvest season in the world is also situated here. De Doorns Cellar offers free seasonal cellar tours. Educational tours can be undertaken at Villion Farms’ Grand View pack shed. They also offers scrumptious grape tasting sessions.
