⚔️ BATTLEFIELDS OF KZN – PART 5: THE TUGELA HEIGHTS CAMPAIGN

In February 1900, British forces fought a series of hard battles across the Tugela Heights in their final attempt to break through the Boer positions and relieve the besieged town of Ladysmith.

The campaign culminated at Pieter’s Hill on 27 February 1900, where the British finally broke through the Boer defensive line. The following day, the Siege of Ladysmith was relieved.

Today, monuments, cemeteries and sweeping views across the Tugela Heights tell the story of this dramatic final chapter in the Relief of Ladysmith.

KZN BATTLEFIELDS SERIES – PART 3 🇿🇦

Wagon Hill – one of the fiercest days of the Siege of Ladysmith

In the early hours of 6 January 1900, Boer forces launched a major attack on the British positions on the Platrand above Ladysmith.

At Wagon Hill, the fighting became desperate, including fierce close-quarter and hand-to-hand combat.

Among those killed were Lieutenant Robert Digby-Jones of the Royal Engineers and Trooper Herman Albrecht of the Imperial Light Horse. Both were awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously for their actions.

Today, the Imperial Light Horse monument overlooks this historic battlefield — a reminder of one of the hardest-fought days of the Siege of Ladysmith.

KZN BATTLEFIELDS SERIES – PART 3 🇿🇦

Wagon Hill – one of the fiercest days of the Siege of Ladysmith.

In the early hours of 6 January 1900, Boer forces launched a major attack against the British defensive positions surrounding the besieged town of Ladysmith.

Some of the most desperate fighting took place on the Platrand at Wagon Hill.

At Wagon Point the battle descended into fierce close-quarter and hand-to-hand fighting as both sides struggled to control this important position.

Among those killed were Lieutenant Robert Digby-Jones of the Royal Engineers and Trooper Herman Albrecht of the Imperial Light Horse. Both were subsequently awarded the Victoria Cross for their actions.

Today the impressive Imperial Light Horse monument overlooks this historic battlefield.

The veld is peaceful now, making it difficult to imagine the intensity of the fighting that took place here more than 125 years ago.
