๐ŸŒฟ A community is only as beautiful as the people who care for it.

Clean streets, thriving parks, welcoming public spaces and vibrant local businesses don't happen by chance. They are the result of people choosing to make a difference every single day.

It starts with the small things:
๐Ÿ’š Supporting local businesses.
๐Ÿ’š Respecting public spaces.
๐Ÿ’š Disposing of litter responsibly.
๐Ÿ’š Looking out for one another.
๐Ÿ’š Taking pride in where we live, work and visit.

When communities work together, amazing things happen. Every positive action, no matter how small, contributes to a place we're all proud to call home.

Let's continue building communities that inspire visitors, support local businesses and create a better future for everyone.

Together, we make the difference.

๐ŸŒŠ Did You Know? Wilson's Wharf is one of Durban's best-kept waterfront treasures.

Nestled along the edge of Durban Harbour, Wilson's Wharf offers a unique perspective on one of the busiest working harbours in the Southern Hemisphere. While cargo ships, tugs and fishing vessels go about their daily business, visitors can relax and enjoy the atmosphere from the waterfront.

Originally developed as part of Durban's harbour infrastructure in the early 1900s, the area has evolved into a destination where maritime history meets modern leisure. Today you'll find restaurants, boat charters, fishing opportunities, local craft stores and spectacular harbour views all in one place.

Whether you're watching a massive container ship glide past, enjoying fresh seafood, taking a harbour cruise or simply soaking up the sights and sounds of the marina, there's always something happening at Wilson's Wharf.

As part of the SODURBA region, Wilson's Wharf is another reminder that South Durban is filled with fascinating places waiting to be explored.

# # ๐Ÿฌ Did You Know? Dolphins Are Seen Almost Every Day Along the Bluff!

When people think of South Durban's marine life, whales often steal the spotlight during winter. But here's something many people don't know...

**Dolphins are regular visitors to the Bluff all year round!**

The warm waters of the Indian Ocean provide the perfect environment for several dolphin species, with the **Indian Ocean bottlenose dolphin** being the one most commonly seen along our coastline. Whether you're taking an early morning walk, enjoying breakfast with an ocean view or simply relaxing at one of the Bluff's scenic viewpoints, there's a good chance you'll spot these playful marine mammals.

Dolphins are highly intelligent, incredibly social and often travel in pods. They can frequently be seen surfing the waves, swimming alongside boats or leaping gracefully from the waterโ€”creating unforgettable moments for visitors and locals alike.

Their regular presence is also a positive sign of a healthy marine ecosystem. Protecting our oceans, reducing pollution and respecting marine wildlife helps ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy these amazing encounters.

So next time you visit the Bluff, don't just keep an eye out for whales...

๐Ÿ‘€ Watch the waves.
๐Ÿฌ You might be greeted by a pod of dolphins instead!

Have you spotted dolphins along the Bluff? We'd love to hear about your experience or see your photos in the comments!

๐ŸŒŠ The Bluff is More Than Beaches

When people hear "The Bluff," many immediately think of its beautiful beaches. And while our coastline is undoubtedly one of South Durban's greatest treasures, there is so much more waiting to be discovered.

The Bluff is a place where nature, history, adventure and community come together.

Did you know you can experience one of the world's best land based whale watching destinations right here during the annual humpback whale migration? Every winter, thousands of whales pass our coastline, creating unforgettable moments for visitors and locals alike.

Beyond the ocean, The Bluff is home to remarkable coastal forests, wetlands, birdlife and marine ecosystems that support an incredible variety of wildlife. Whether you're an avid photographer, birdwatcher or simply someone who enjoys spending time in nature, there's always something new to explore.

Our coastline also tells an extraordinary story. From its maritime heritage and the historic Cave Rock, to its transformation from a former whaling community into a globally recognised Whale Heritage Area, The Bluff is a place where history and conservation meet.

Looking for adventure? Spend the day surfing, fishing, walking scenic coastal trails, discovering hidden viewpoints, enjoying local cafรฉs and restaurants, or simply watching the sunrise over the Indian Ocean.

Most importantly, The Bluff is about its people. Passionate local businesses, community organisations, conservation groups and volunteers work together every day to protect this unique corner of Durban and welcome visitors with genuine hospitality.

The Bluff isn't just a destination to visit.

It's a place to experience.

The Lost Landmark of the Bluff: Cave Rock

Long before many of us knew the Bluff as a place of whale watching, ocean views, surfing and coastal memories, there was once a natural landmark so well known that it became part of Durbanโ€™s identity.

It was called Cave Rock.

Standing near the Bluff headland, Cave Rock was a large sandstone formation shaped over time by the sea, wind and weather. For generations, it was more than just a rock. It was a landmark, a gathering place, a coastal icon and a piece of Durbanโ€™s natural heritage.

Locals knew it. Visitors photographed it. Fishermen, surfers and families made memories around it. It stood proudly against the Indian Ocean, watching over the coastline that we now celebrate as one of KwaZulu Natalโ€™s most special marine heritage areas.

But during World War II, Cave Rockโ€™s story changed.

With Durban Harbour playing an important role as a strategic port, coastal defence became a serious concern. The Bluff, with its height and position, formed part of Durbanโ€™s wartime defence landscape. Cave Rock was eventually destroyed by dynamite in the 1940s by the South African War Department.

According to historical accounts, there were concerns that the formation was too recognisable from the sea and could help identify Durbanโ€™s coastline. Other accounts suggest it may have obstructed or complicated coastal defence lines from gun positions on the Bluff.

Whatever the exact reason, the result was the same.

One of Durbanโ€™s most distinctive natural landmarks was lost.

Today, Cave Rock lives on in name, memory and local stories. It reminds us that heritage is not only found in buildings or museums. Sometimes it is found in the shape of a coastline, in the stories passed down by older generations and in the places that once helped people feel connected to home.

The Bluff has changed over time. From whaling history to whale conservation, from wartime defence to tourism and marine awareness, this coastline carries many layers of South Durbanโ€™s story.

Cave Rock may no longer stand as it once did, but its story remains part of the Bluffโ€™s identity.

It is a reminder to protect what we still have.

Our coastline.
Our history.
Our marine life.
Our memories.
Our South Durban heritage.
