πŸ‹πŸŒŠ Why Are Whales Coming To Our Coast? πŸŒŠπŸ‹

Every year, whales make one of the longest migrations on Earth, travelling up to 8,000 km from the cold waters of Antarctica to warmer coastal regions.

πŸ’‘ Is it only humpback whales?

No, but humpback whales are the most commonly seen during this time.

You may also spot:
β€’ Southern right whales, which come closer to shore to calve
β€’ Bryde’s whales, which are present in our waters throughout the year but are more difficult to spot
Humpbacks are the most visible because they are active, often breaching and interacting at the surface.

πŸ’‘ Why do they make this journey?

It is all about breeding and calving.

Whales move to warmer waters to:
βœ” Give birth to their calves
βœ” Protect newborns from predators
βœ” Allow calves to grow stronger without the harsh cold

Unlike the icy feeding grounds, these warmer waters are safer and calmer, making them ideal for early development.

πŸ“… When do they arrive?

Typically, whales pass through between June and November:

β€’ Early season: Adults migrating north
β€’ Mid season: Mothers and newborn calves
β€’ Late season: Return journey south

⏳ How long do they stay?

They do not settle in one place for long. Instead, they are constantly moving along the coastline during their migration. Some may pause briefly to rest or nurse their calves.

🌊 During this time, you may witness:

βœ” Breaching
βœ” Tail slapping
βœ” Close to shore swimming, especially mothers with calves

This annual migration is not just a spectacle, it is a vital part of the whale life cycle and one of nature’s most incredible journeys.
