SA’s Garden Route Tops World List
The Garden Route, which stretches from Mossel Bay to the Storm’s River Mouth, has been rated as one of the best road trips in the world, based on weather, driving conditions and attractions along the route. It scored 90.6 out of 100.
The Garden Route gives you a journey that turns a simple road trip into an unforgettable adventure, combining dramatic ocean views, indigenous forests, mountain passes, charming towns, and some of the country’s best outdoor experiences.
For many, the journey begins in Mossel Bay, where Portuguese explorers first arrived in the late 1400s. Today, it’s known for sunny beaches, whale watching, and relaxed seaside living. From there, the road winds east through rolling farmland and dense forest toward the village of Wilderness, which, true to its name, feels wonderfully untouched, with long empty beaches, quiet lagoons, and hiking trails disappearing into lush greenery.
Set time aside to spend a few days at the Wilderness National Park, where you can hire a kayak to explore the winding waterways and follow some of the well-established trails winding through indigenous habitats which are home to diverse wildlife and, for birders, five kingfisher species.
One of the Garden Route’s most beloved stops is Knysna, famous for its lagoon and dramatic sandstone heads guarding the entrance to the sea. The town has a relaxed, creative energy, with waterfront restaurants and markets where local crafters sell their goods.
You can drive or hike into the forest that borders the town. Marvel at giant Outeniqua Yellowwood trees, follow the trails, and enjoy a picnic at Jubilee Creek.
Further east lies Plettenberg Bay, where, during whale season, you are sure to see the dramatic breaching displays put on by the southern right whales just offshore, while dolphins frequently surf alongside boats in the bay.
The route reaches a dramatic climax near Tsitsikamma National Park, where thick forest meets rugged coastline. Here you can walk across the famous suspension bridge over the Storms River mouth, hike sections of the legendary Otter Trail, or simply stand in awe as waves crash against the cliffs below. For the adrenaline junkies, there is one of the world’s highest bungee jumps and zip lines at the nearby Bloukrans Bridge. For the less adventurous, who still want to experience the thrill of the bridge, there is the skywalk, where you can take a walk on the underside of the highest bridge in Africa.
What makes the Garden Route so special is not only its scenery, but its rhythm. It invites travellers to slow down, stop often, and savour every small discovery — from roadside farm stalls and hidden beaches to forest cabins and unforgettable sunsets. Whether explored over a few days or a few weeks, the Garden Route remains one of South Africa’s most rewarding journeys.
