At Offroad Routes and Tours, we do guided self-drive trips to interesting places in Southern Africa that have remained preserved as close to the original natural beauty. A 4-wheel drive vehicle rigged for camping is essential to reach some of the most beautiful spots. We travel for the pure joy of it and few things beat the sense of freedom when exploring places where only some have dared to ventu

re. Wild camping is part and parcel of how we travel, but for variety, we might stay in a guest house now and then.

Trans Kouga Wilderness Tour | Baviaanskloof Magic

Part of our Trans Kouga Wilderness Tour is currently unfolding through the heart of the wild Baviaanskloof!

Last night we camped at Rooihoek, a scenic spot tucked deep within the Baviaanskloof Wilderness Reserve. Today we made our way to Kudu Khaya— a working citrus farm with a beautiful campsites alongside the Ys River—where we’ll be spending the next two nights.

The drive was slippery in parts, but that only added to the fun—true overlanding style! We soaked in breathtaking views and made a stop at the historic Baviaans cableway, a charming piece of local history still standing strong.

The Baviaanskloof Wilderness Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of South Africa’s largest and most unspoiled conservation areas. Remote, raw, and real—it’s a place where mountain meets bushveld, and every bend in the road offers a new surprise.

Off the beaten track and into nature’s soul—just the way we like it.

We tackled the Rust & Vrede 4x4 Trail today as part of our Trans Kouga Wilderness adventure — a beautiful 78 km route (graded 2) winding from Kareedouw into the Baviaanskloof.

We’ll overnight at the Rus & Vrede Bushcamp tonight.

The fynbos was absolutely spectacular, even with the soft rain that made the views a bit hazy. The trail isn’t too technical, but just challenging enough to keep it fun — a true offroad gem in the Kouga Mountains!

This is what freedom feels like.

First night of our adventure!

Trans Kouga Wilderness Tour 2025 - FULLY BOOKED

We kicked off with a quick briefing, followed by braai fires lighting up the evening as everyone settled in. The night ended perfectly with stories and laughter around the campfire.

Tonight, we’re camping at the beautiful Oaksrest Vineyards Guest Farm near Ladismith. The dam here perfectly reflects the beautiful clouds with Towerkop in the background—just had to capture and share this moment with you!

One of the best parts of overlanding through Zambia is the abundance of fresh, seasonal produce available in every village.

In July last year, the roadside stalls were filled with red onions, juicy watermelons, sweet bananas, ripe tomatoes, sweet potatoes, and crisp cabbage—locally grown and packed with flavor.

We quickly became regular customers, stocking up along the way and enjoying not just the fresh produce but also the warm hospitality of the vendors. These vibrant roadside markets add so much character to the journey!

The new bridge over the Chobe River is an engineering masterpiece, making the journey to Zambia far easier than before.

What once took hours is now a seamless crossing. When the river is in full flood, the view from the bridge must be truly breathtaking.

Hel se Pad Pass, a historic route dating back to 1880, offers adventurers a unique journey through the rugged landscape near Vanrhynsdorp. Spanning just 6.6 kilometers, this pass may seem short, but its twists and turns, combined with its rich history, make it a compelling destination for those seeking a memorable driving experience.

Initially designed by Mr. T.W. Bain and subsequently realigned over the years, Hel se Pad Pass showcases the ingenuity of its creators. Its gentle gradients defy the challenge of navigating its twists and turns, while the drive offers a thrilling adventure for drivers.

With an altitude variance of 480 meters and an average gradient of 1:14, Hel se Pad Pass presents both scenic beauty and technical difficulty. While a 4x4 vehicle isn't essential, a vehicle with good ground clearance is recommended to navigate the terrain safely.

Exploring Hel se Pad Pass isn't just about the drive — it's also about the journey back to civilisation once you've reached the bottom. This adds an extra layer of excitement to the experience, making it a true adventure for enthusiasts of gravel roads and scenic routes alike.

Although driving the pass in descending mode is recommended, we have always tackled it the other way around.
