Spotted two โLittle Kingsโ this morning while out on guide training!
This species is often overlooked, yet frequently appears on our guestsโ target lists. They favour this type of habitatโtypically perching on open or dead branches.
They are sometimes confused with African Dusky Flycatchers. Their hosts include cisticolas, warblers, and prinias.
Key identification features include a sharp bill, white markings on the tail, and a distinctive insect-like call. If youโre lucky enough to spot their feet, youโll notice they are zygodactylโjust like owls, woodpeckers, and cuckoosโmeaning two toes face forward and two backward.
While not especially common, there are several reliable locations around Cape Town, particularly in the northern and southern suburbs, where they can be seen.
Their scientific name is Prodotiscus regulusโwith regulus meaning โlittle king.โ
