11 NIGHT SAILING CRUISE, ITALY, GREECE & CROATIA

After passing though Rome passport control and customs, we make our way to the train station, located just outside the airport and train to Civitavecchia which is the Port city of Rome located about 1 hour or so away. Our magnificent sailing vessel is awaiting us at the port just a short walk from the train station.
After we are settled into our room, which is very reminiscent of old-time sailing vessels, we explore the sailing vessel. It is very classic old time sailing ship with a lot of wood and traditional décor, and yet the luxury of 2 lovely pools, library, small shop, outside and inside bar and lovely main saloon with grand piano.
On board all meals are included and are very good, but drinks are not included. Wifi is also not included and is pretty pricey.
Evening entertainment is available after supper nightly at about 10 pm for all who wish to attend.
But sailing on this magnificent sailing vessel is quite an experience especially coming into and leaving ports to the impressive sound of Vangelis’ Conquest of Paradise blasting for all to hear. And between port visits, simply relaxing beside the one of the pools reading or gazing at the billowing sails is quite mesmerizing. Daily activities such as mast climbing, Yoga, dance lessons, water sports at certain ports are also on offer. Whether you are a solo traveller looking for a time out to relax or a couple travelling, this experience is a memorable one. Dinner times you are able to free seat at different tables each night allowing solos or couples to mingle and get to know other guests.
The benefit of being a smaller intermate vessel with only max 120 passengers, allows it to enter almost all the ports and dock, rather than docking way out to sea and have tedious waits for tenders to the ports, as is custom for the large cruise liners.
Each afternoon a report is given for the port calls of the following day for guests to choose which excursions ( at an extra cost ) they would like to join. Also most of the ports are easily negotiated on ones own and at a far cheaper cost than the prebooked excursions.

BOTSWANA AND CHOBE RIVER

After our 3 nights in Zimbabwe, we take our short road transfer through the Botswana border to visit the Chobe River. As mentioned, in chapter 1, this can be done as a full day trip from your Zimbabwe / Zambian hotel as well as a more affordable alternative.
Our home for the next 2 nights is the Chobe Safari Lodge, which I absolutely loved and could spend at least a week relaxing in its comforts. The lodge offers 2 separate accommodations, each with their own superb restaurants. They do also offer camp sites for the more rustic traveller. All packages usually come with sunset river cruise, game drives into the Chobe National Park.
Early morning risers can view the Chobe wildlife arising from their slumbers. But even the non early risers can have a chance on the 2nd departure, which to be honest in the colder months is a better option.
Evenings offer Sundowners on the river cruise to watch the amazing and colourful sunsets and all the water wildlife enjoying themselves.
For those wishing to treat themselves, 2 nights at a land lodge and 2 – 3 nights on the luxurious houseboat of the Chobe Princess or Zambezi Queen will offer wildlife views from a different perspective and is the ultimate African experience.
Flights out of the nearby Kasane airport make for quick and easy departures direct to JNB.

MOSI-OA-TUNYA - The Smoke that Thunders

After a short flight out of JNB to Vic Falls, we arrive in the quaint and surprisingly very neat and tidy village of Victoria Falls.
We embarked on our short but fun-filled and exciting holiday to inspect various hotels in order to offer you, my clients, the best holiday experience suitable for your budget and requirements.
The village offers a wide choice of restaurants and curio shops through which to browse and shop. It feels very safe to walk around the pleasant little village, other than be warned not to walk at night where the danger is on 4 legs. Since the village is within the National Park, elephants and other wildlife roam the perimeters ( also during the day ) and occasionally visit the town at night.
The 198m long spectacular Iron Victoria Falls Bridge was completed in 1905 ( started the year before ) and spans the mighty Zambezi River Gorge between Zambia and Zimbabwe, about 350m from the Falls, “ The Smoke that Thunders” so named by David Livingstone. The falls are the considered the largest based on the width of 1.7m and height of 108m.
The 128m high Bridge offers exciting adventure opportunities for the thrill seekers. These adrenaline sports, offered by Shear Water Adventures, include 111m bungee jump, super exciting Bridge Swing ( which I did !! ), Zip Line from one side to the other and Bridge Walking tour. It is highly recommended to try at least one if you are brave enough.
Walking along the rainforests along the waterfall trail is equally as spectacular. Raincoats are a must from all the falls mist, hence the “ rain forest “ foliage. You will experience different views depending on the seasons and rainfall. We visited in April after an abundance of rain causing an abundance of water and mist making some photoshoots difficult. However, during the drier seasons, the visibility is a bit clearer, making for better photos, and also allowing some activities, which are suspended during the wet season for safety reasons, such as the Devils pool on the Zambian side.
A helicopter flip, known as the Flight of Angels, over the falls is also something to experience and different way to view the falls. There are different options to suite different budgets. Other activities are high tea at one of the 5 * hotels, sunset river cruises to view the hippos and crocodiles. You can easily prebook a full day trip to Botswana Chobe River to see the wildlife in the Chobe Reserve and experience a Chobe River Cruise.
BENEFITS OF VIC FALLS:
No visas required and short flights. A variety of hotels to suite your budget. And most hotels offer free shuttles to the falls, and some sunset river cruises as well.
Ideally, I would recommend either 3 nights Vic Falls, or 2 nights Vic Falls + 2 nights Livingstone on the Zambian side. And if the budget allows add on 3-4 nights Chobe River in Botswana. ( see chapter 2 for more info on Chobe )
