What is a Game Capture? 🩺

Game capture is the process of safely locating, immobilizing, handling, and transporting wildlife for conservation purposes.

Animals may be translocated to establish new populations, improve genetic diversity, support conservation programs, or relocate them to protected habitats where they can thrive.

Every capture requires a highly trained team of veterinarians, wildlife professionals, pilots, and conservationists working together to ensure the safety and wellbeing of each animal.

Our Pre-Vet students headed into Morgan Bays community for a day of preventative healthcare. The girls got to work administering injections (ivermectin), oral medications (panacur) and topical treatment (flea powder) to animals that would otherwise have no access to veterinary care 🩺

Our Pre-Vet Programme runs year round offering students/volunteers hands on experiences working with small animal, large animal and South African Wildlife! 🇿🇦

When working in townships our staff and students often find themselves in puppy heaven! Due to limited access to veterinary care and the increasing cost of neutering animals, breeding amongst township dogs is frequent, leading to surprise litters 🐾

Our students are involved in de-worming and treating fleas in these little guys to give them the best fighting chance at life! 🫶🏻

Tranquillising wildlife safely and efficiently relies heavily on using the appropriate equipment, drugs and dosages for each species 💉

Tranquillising darts delivered via a remote delivery system (typically a dart gun) is one of the safest ways to chemically immobilise or treat wild animals.

✨Veterinary Nurse Claire recently arrived home from a 5 week trip on our Pre-Vet Programme✨

Here’s what she had to say about her experience…

‘Spending 5 weeks on the pre-vet programme completely exceeded all expectations and I honestly feel like a different person since I’ve arrived home.

From doing the most rewarding community work (providing healthcare treatment to dogs, cats and goats), to working with cows, sheep and piglets and being lucky enough to experience game captures with Impala, Sable and a Lioness.. it’s fair to say my experience has been second to none. The programme offers so much opportunity to really get hands on and come out of your comfort zone.

The programme has also given me opportunities to meet new people and I have been lucky enough to make friends for life. One thing about the South African community is that they’re some of the friendliest people you will ever meet.

The staff were so welcoming from the second I stepped off the plane in East London and they really made it feel like home. My experience wouldn’t have been what it was without them. Lily, who I booked the programme through, was so helpful from the moment I e-mailed her and made me feel at ease about the whole experience. Thank you GAEA and Safari4u, I will definitely be back!’
