In order to preserve this World Heritage site, the Peru authorities have revised the rules and said that every tourist entering Machu Picchu must now be accompanied by a professional guide. Good thing we have just that!

The ancient citadel of Machu Picchu is one of the world’s most famous tourist destinations. More than 30 years ago, UNESCO added the historic site to its World Heritage collection, calling the Incan sanctuary in Peru “among the greatest artistic, architectural, and land use achievements anywhere....

Machu Picchu, Peru
Set in the midst of steep mountains, flanked by the deep canyon formed by the Urubamba River. The citadel of Machu Picchu is situated at 2.360 m.

Machu Picchu was rediscovered by the American archaeologist Hiram Bingham in 1911. In 2007, it was declared as one of the New Seven Wonders of the Modern World - it now boasts over 3 000 visitors per day.

A little bit about the magical Salkantay Trek:
Salkantay Trek - 5D/4N

DAY 1: CUZCO - SORAYPAYPAMPA
After being collected from our hotel at approximately 4.30am, we depart, by bus, towards Mollepata. This town is located at an altitude of 2,850 metres above sea level, and it is here that we will have our first breakfast together.

We then walk for about 2 hours before stopping for lunch. After which, we walk for another 4 hours until we arrive at our camp site in Soraypampa (3 800 metres above sea level!!!).

DAY 2: SORAYPAMPA - COLPABAMBA
We wake up to an impressive dawn, and views of the majestic Salkantay Mountain. After breakfast, at approximately 7:00 am we will continue our trip which will last 7 to 8 hours.

We will enter into a kind of canyon, which will lead us to the outskirts of Salkantay at a level of 4 600 metres above sea level.

After the first three hours of walking, we will have lunch. We will then descend until we reach the edge of the jungle and spend the night at our camp in Colpapamba.

DAY 3: COLPABAMBA - LA PLAYA - SANTA TERESA
From here, the warm weather and tropical rainforest begins. We walk for a couple of hours to our lunch spot - where we will eat at a local restaurant and observe the way of living of the local people.

From there, we will set up camp at Santa Teresa and head on to the hot springs of Cocalpampa, as well as the waterfalls of Waynapoco if time permits.

Be sure to bring your swimming costume along - the natural warm baths will really refresh and rejuvenate your bones!

DAY 4: SANTA TERESA – AGUAS CALIENTES
After another early awakening and breakfast, we will continue our walk until hydroelectric town, where we will stop for lunch. We will then continue walking along the railway tracks for roughly 2 ½ hours until we reach the foot of Machu Picchu at a town called Aguas Calientes. Here we will finally have a nice warm shower as well as a much needed comfy bed to sleep in, as we will be spending the night in a hostel (no more camping!).

Optional additional activities
Instead of walking in the morning, there is the option of zip lining. South America's highest zip lines run along this trail. They are situated approximately 15 minutes from Santa Teresa and the full duration of the zip lining will take roughly 2 hours.

If you are interested in this alternative, the cost is an extra R500. Please let us know in advance in order to secure your booking.

DAY 5: MACHU PICCHU
On this day, we will get to visit the great ruins of Machu Picchu. To get there in time for sunrise we start the ascent at 4:00 a.m. The walk takes approximately 1 ½ hours - but is very worth it once you are at the top. We will then have a short guided tour of Machu Picchu and thereafter be free to explore the ruins as desired.

Later, we will take the train back to Ollantaytambo and transfer by bus back to our hostel for a well deserved rest.
