With over 700 species and 12 of the 15 Upper Guinea Forest biome endemics- Ghana is a must see.

These photos are memories of a trip that Niall took in Ghana back in 2021. A fantastic trip through most of Ghana saw him hit almost 450 species in the country with mind blowing views of one of Africa’s most sought after birds- the White-necked Picathartes/Rockfowl.

Other mouthwatering species included Nkulengu Rail, Red-cheeked Wattle-eye, Akun Eagle Owl and the Red-billed Helmetshrike to name a few.

We have an upcoming Ghana tour with spaces still remaining- 22 days of prime birding in November 2026. Email [email protected] for more info.

Calling all keen birders and endemic chasers!
The Garden Route is covered in many habitats allowing for large species totals. You can bird high altitude fynbos, Karoo and coastal forest all within the same day.

Endemics are found throughout with some highlights being Cape Clapper Lark, Protea Canary, Ground Woodpecker, Karoo Korhaan, Ludwig’s Korhaan, Karoo Eremomela to name a few.

The Garden Route birding is highly under appreciated and most endemics are easier than at the spots around Cape Town.

Flights come in directly to George from Cape Town and Johannesburg and are well priced so a day trip can be done very easily!

Carmine as far as the eye can see.

We spend a lot of time with these bee eater colonies on our Caprivi Tours. A boat at a respectable distance from the colonies allow for great views and fantastic photographic opportunities.

There are also great mammal sightings from these boats with regulars being Hippos, African Elephant, Sable Antelope, Roan Antelope to name a few. We have also had great lion sightings.

We have another Caprivi Tour running in September 2026-enquire now while spaces last.

BIRD ALERT!!! BIRD ALERT!!!

I hear a call!! But what is it – I don’t recognise the call – hang on, let me use Merlin Sound ID…..

“This app is ****ing useless!! It recognises none of the calls!!”

Sound/look familiar? Well, like any child, Merlin needs to be taught the calls of the local birds, like learning a language. In USA and Europe, there is a database of thousands upon thousands, or at least hundreds of calls in the eBird.org platform – Merlin uses this database to match species and come up with results. In South Africa, this database is very scant and desperately needs our – your – help! How? Easy! Record calls in the field using your cellphone, and upload these to an eBird checklist – preferably 45 seconds or more.

Angola 2026: This year we saw all of the endemics and a load more special birds, on both of our back to back trips. A new tour destination was Namba Mountain, where Laura’s Woodland Warbler was very confiding, we also got very close views of Bar-tailed Trogon. We’ll repeat this tour next year from 20th August to 6th September. It is timed to coincide with the arrival of Brazza’s Martin, a highly sought after bird by any world lister. Please email [email protected] if you are interested.
