Today is E-Waste Awareness Day. Ensure your e-waste is properly discarded. We have our own depot at our Gansbaai Landfill site. today is the perfect opportunity to put all those items in a box and drop them off.

Let's keep Gansbaai clean and beautiful and ensure we recycle.

CLEAR THE CLUTTER: E-Waste Collection Drive on 14 October

On 14 October 2026, Overstrand Municipality will host an e-waste collection drive at designated drop-off points across the municipal area, giving residents an opportunity to safely dispose of unwanted electronic items and keep harmful waste out of the environment.

E-waste includes any electrical or electronic device powered by electricity or batteries. If not disposed of correctly, it can release harmful substances into the environment and pose risks to ecosystems, wildlife and water resources.

Residents can recycle the following items:
• Computers and laptops
• Mobile phones and tablets
• TVs and monitors
• Printers and cartridges
• Small household appliances
• Cables, chargers and accessories
• Batteries (including rechargeable batteries)
• Light bulbs (including LED and fluorescent bulbs)
• Gaming consoles and devices

Drop off your e-waste at:
• Hermanus Waste Material Recovery Facility
• Gansbaai Landfill Site
• Kleinmond Transfer Station

Items can be dropped off between 09:00 and 15:00.

Residents are reminded to remove any personal data from electronic devices before recycling them. Household refuse, glass, paint, chemicals and other hazardous waste will not be accepted.

Small actions can make a big difference. Reduce, reuse and recycle.

Nicholas Burger is raising awareness and funds for our African Penguins. He is arriving anytime between 2:30pm and 4pm weather dependent. Penguin feeding time is 3pm, have a cake and coffee and let’s show our Gansbaai gees and support this amazing gentleman when he arrives.

Project Penguin: 72 km Run to Raise Awareness for Africa’s Critically Endangered Penguins

Grotto Beach, Hermanus, to Kleinbaai | Saturday, 17 October 2026

On Saturday, 17 October, ultra runner Nicholas Burger will take on a challenging 72 km run from Grotto Beach in Hermanus to the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary in Kleinbaai, using his passion for running to raise awareness and funds for the conservation of the African penguin and the marine ecosystems on which it depends.
The run forms part of Project Penguin, a fundraising and awareness campaign launched by Burger earlier this year in support of the Dyer Island Conservation Trust (DICT).
Starting at 06:00, Nicholas will tackle a route that includes coastal paths, mountain climbs and roads through the Overberg, finishing at the sanctuary in Kleinbaai. The route covers approximately 72 km, with around 1,200 m of elevation gain. His expected arrival is between 14:30 and 16:00, depending on conditions on the day.
Nicholas will share his live location during the run, allowing supporters to follow his progress. Additional support runners are expected to join him during the final section from Stanford towards Kleinbaai.
The challenge is the centrepiece of Project Penguin, but the campaign aims to reach beyond the run itself. Funds raised will support DICT’s conservation work, including seabird rescue and rehabilitation, scientific research and monitoring, marine ecosystem protection and environmental education.

A penguin welcome in Kleinbaai
The run will culminate at the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary, where DICT and the APSS team are planning a special welcome for Nicholas and Project Penguin supporters.
The aim is to bring together the local community, conservation supporters and everyone who has followed the campaign to celebrate the effort and raise further awareness of the plight of the African penguin.
Members of the public are encouraged to support Nicholas along the route, particularly at planned refreshment and support stations, and to join the welcome at the sanctuary in Kleinbaai.

Every word of encouragement will help make this demanding challenge a shared effort for penguin conservation. Join the rally to support our African Penguins.

Overstrand was the venue of the WESSA 2026 annual awards celebrating the amazing achievements by our conservation stakeholders efforts in both the public and private sector to promote sustainable conservation along our coastlines for the benefit of all. WESSA celebrated their 100th year and Blue Flag celebrated their 25th year. What a great achievement!

Overstrand also has boat operators with Blue Flag boat operator Status in Gansbaai, Marine Dynamics and White Shark Diving Company, and Die Plaat Beach, Walker Bay has Green Coast Status.

Blue Flag recognition requires strict international protocols and standards that require ongoing monitoring and we can be exceptionally proud of all involved in our Overstrand region.

Stop The Strangle is also a WESSA initiative to tackle one of the deadliest forms of marine pollution : ghost fishing gear. Each year more than a million marine creatures die due to fishing gear entanglements! Horrific! Marine Dynamics is an advocate for this vital initiative and you can find the team installing fishing gear holders along our coastline where the community can put their old fishing lines instead of in the ocean.

South Africa has one of the most incredible coastlines in the world. 3000km of coastline with an amazing 13 000 species that call it home... and almost a third of that are only found on our coastline. That excludes all our marine visitors. We have one of the most biodiverse coastlines in the world. SA was the first country outside of Europe to get actively involved in the Blue Flag programme and Grotto Beach, Hermanus has had Blue Flag status since the programmes' inception in SA 25 years ago! What an accolade!

Congratulations! We had TEN CLEANUP TEAMS AROUND GANSBAAI that removed an amazing estimated 355kg of trash on International Coastal Cleanup Day! Isn’t that incredible! There were, literally, hundreds of pieces of trash that will not make it into the ocean and countless marine lives saved. We also cleaned up areas of our neighbourhood’s and can proudly walk the streets in this place we call home.

A massive thank you to all the participants that arrived to ensure a team effort from our community! You made the difference! The ten teams were from Bbos, Blompark, De Kelders Perlemoenbaai, Gansbaai, Kleinbaai, Masakhane, Pearly Beach and Uilkraalsmond.
We are proud to live in a community where our local stakeholders are also passionate about our conservation and cleanup efforts – thank you to Dyer Island Conservation Trust, Pearly Beach Conservation, White Shark Projects and White Shark Diving Company. You inspire us to be better citizens.

Every piece of trash counts. Every action counts. Every one of us can make a difference.

It was about our Gansbaai people coming together and taking responsibility for the place we call home.

The Ivanhoe is licensed to carry up to 40 passengers. Every trip, we take 25.

Why? Because a whale watching boat isn't a commuter ferry. When a Southern Right surfaces beside the vessel, we don't want anyone stuck behind three rows of shoulders. Capping numbers at 25 means every guest gets a seat, an unobstructed view, and room to move to whichever side of the deck the action is on.

It also keeps things calmer for the whales — less noise, less movement, more of them choosing to stick around.
