Gansbaai Tourism represented the Overstrand at the RTO Forum where Wesgro (Western Cape's Agency for Tourism, Trade And Investment) and DEDAT (Western Cape Department Of Economic Development & Tourism) provided some fascinating updates.

FROM THE MUNICIPAL MANAGER'S DESK:

TOURISM TEAMS JOIN FORCES
Overstrand Municipality’s Cape Whale Coast Tourism Office attended the Wesgro Regional Tourism Organisation Winter Forum in Arniston on 26 August 206, bringing together tourism representatives from across the Western Cape.
With the theme “Unlocking Tourism Growth in the Western Cape”, the forum looked at what is happening in tourism and, more importantly, how the province can turn opportunities into real growth.
Julia Louw, Wesgro Head of Leisure Tourism, shared insights into changing visitor trends and what travellers are looking for, while Jacques Stoltz, Director: Tourism at DEDAT, provided an update on tourism projects and support available to the industry.
The message for Overstrand is clear: there is plenty to build on. With a strong tourism offering already in place, the focus is now on finding new ways to package and promote what we have.
If we start thinking differently and working together, there are exciting opportunities to create experiences that encourage visitors to stay longer and explore more. This could include everything from local food and heritage to outdoor adventures and meeting the people who make the Overstrand special.
By working with neighbouring tourism regions and local tourism businesses, we can also create better itineraries for visitors while opening up more opportunities for small businesses and job creation.
Tourism Growth Fund
Tourism businesses can also make use of the Western Cape Government’s Tourism Growth Fund, which has R7 million available during the 2026/27 financial year for qualifying tourism projects.
The fund supports tourism infrastructure, product and business development projects across the province. Applications are currently open, and businesses are encouraged to check the requirements carefully and ensure that all required documents are submitted.
Overstrand tourism stakeholders are encouraged to find out more through the Western Cape Government website or from the Overstrand Tourism offices in Gansbaai, Hermanus, Stanford and Kleinmond.

Tourism Growth Fund – Applications Open

The Tourism Growth Fund has R7 million available in the 2026/27 financial year to support qualifying tourism projects.
Applications are open with no fixed closing date and will remain open until all funding has been allocated. As grants are awarded on a rolling basis, early applications are strongly encouraged.

The Fund provides co-funding for high-impact tourism projects that improve visitor infrastructure, develop new tourism experiences, and strengthen tourism SMMEs through business development and market access. Priority is given to projects that address infrastructure gaps, enhance visitor experiences, and support growth in areas such as farm and food tourism, village heritage, wellness, jewel towns, and Western Cape trails.

Eligible applicants include Western Cape municipalities, tourism organisations, destination management organisations, NGOs/NPOs, and registered tourism businesses and SMMEs operating in the province.

Gansbaai Tourism supports the collaboration of stakeholders who meet the criteria where the project will enhance our tourism offering in the greater Gansbaai area. This is a great opportunity to uplift our community and our tourism offering. Early submission is encouraged whilst the fund has budget available.

ABOUT INTERNATIONAL LIGHTHOUSE WEEKEND
International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend (ILLW) is an annual 48-hour global amateur radio event held on the third full weekend of August, running from 00:01 UTC on Saturday until 24:00 UTC on Sunday. The event brings together amateur (ham) radio operators at more than 500 lighthouses and lightships across over 40 countries, where they make radio contacts, promote amateur radio, and celebrate the rich maritime heritage associated with these iconic navigational landmarks.
This event also helps raise public awareness of the historical and cultural significance of lighthouses and lightships, while encouraging their preservation for future generations. By combining amateur radio with maritime history, the event attracts thousands of operators, volunteers, lighthouse enthusiasts, and visitors from around the world each year.
