Gansbaai Tourism, White Shark Projects and the Gansbaai community joined Save a fishie for Day 41 of their national cleanup campaign. Thank you to the Ta**us Cape Kelp team for pitching in as well. What an incredible Save a fishie team with an inspiring target of collecting an astounding 7 tons of litter from our coastline across SA! They are close to making their target. I'm not sure whether to be happy that they have almost conquered their challenge or completely devastated that they found that much litter that we are responsible for putting there!

What an awesome beach cleanup this morning in Gansbaai, opposite the caravan park!!💙🌎
Despite the cold and windy conditions we were so happy to have members/staff from White Shark Projects, Gansbaai Tourism and Ta**us Cape Kelp join us! Over 35 of us! How awesome is that!?😁
Lots of small items in-between the rocks and washed up kelp! Lots! Lollipop sticks, bottle tops, bits of plastic, sweet wrappers, chip packets, straws, plastic bags, lighters and even nurdles!🙁
So grateful to everyone who came and joined today! We picked up a total of 72 kilograms!!💪🏼
This is our 3rd year cleaning this particular area and we can see the improvement from year 1, not only in the quantity of litter found but also in the amount of local participation and community involvement. 💙🌎
A huge thank you to Blue Ribbon Bread for the awesome goodie bags for our volunteers!! 🙏🏻💙

𝐇𝐎𝐖 𝐓𝐎 𝐌𝐀𝐊𝐄 𝐑𝐄𝐂𝐘𝐂𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐄𝐀𝐒𝐘

This July is Plastic-Free July, and it's a great time to think about what you're throwing away - and which bag you’re putting it in. Recycling doesn’t have to be difficult. With just a small effort, you can make a big difference.

𝟏-𝟐-𝟑 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩𝐬

1. 𝑩𝒖𝒚 𝒂 𝒓𝒐𝒍𝒍 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒔𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒓𝒆𝒇𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝒃𝒂𝒈𝒔
These are available at most supermarkets. If you recycle using a black bag, your recyclables will end up in the landfill along with general household waste.
2. 𝑭𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒔𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒃𝒂𝒈
Add clean recyclables such as cans, glass bottles, paper and plastic. Keep food waste and other non-recyclables out.
3. 𝑷𝒖𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒂𝒈 𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒐𝒏 𝒄𝒐𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒅𝒂𝒚
The municipality provides a weekly refuse collection service to all residents and businesses. On your collection day, place your clear recycling bag and black refuse bag out by 07:00. The solid waste team will collect both and leave you a new clear bag in return.

𝟏-𝟐-𝟑 𝐓𝐢𝐩𝐬
• Keep your own roll of transparent bags as a backup - in case your free one gets blown away or goes missing. It happens!
• Wrap broken glass in newspaper before placing it in bags or bins to avoid injuries to workers. Where possible, take sharp items to public drop-offs or transfer stations.
• Keep recycling wine bottles - it helps reduce landfill waste and supports a circular system in the wine industry. Undamaged bottles can be washed and reused; broken ones are still valuable for recycling.

The national Coast2Coast Beach Cleanup through the Save a fishie initiative has been conducting cleanups across the country and are here in Gansbaai this Thursday. The Gansbaai Tourism team will be there together with White Shark Projects.
